Be it known that I, HORACE lVEEKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reels for Nailing and other Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.

The invention is an improvement upon that described in my patent, No. 299,041, dated May 20, 1884.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a view in side elevation of a reel having the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a View in section across the same, showing the holding position of the movable arms; and Fig. 3 is a view, also in section, showing the movable arms as turned to the position to permit thelcoil to be placed upon the barrel of the rec A represents the barrel of the reel or section upon which the wire is placed.

a is the back of the reel. The barrel is cast integral with it, extends from it, and the section a which extends beyond the barrel,

forms the back flange, against which the wire is held on the barrel.

B is the hub. It is integral with the back plate and has a hole I) for receiving the spindle upon which the reel turns. There is mounted upon the hub to slide lengthwise of it a sleeve or collar C. From this collar extends radially in a forward direction four arms 0. They are preferably cast integral with the sleeve or collar, and each am; has an enlarged outer end 0', having the longitudinal slot 0 and is connected with a finger D, hinged or pivoted to the front face of the barrel within the line of its exterior surface. I have represented these fingers as attached to the barrel by means of ears (Z, cast integral with the barrel and extending from the front edge thereof below its outer surface, and a pin which passes through the ears and Each finger also has the extension 01, which enters the slot in one of the arms of the slide collar or sleeve, with which it is connected by means of a pin. A latching-spring E, having an inclined outer end e fastened to the I back plate of the reel, serves to lock or hold the sleeve or collar in its innermost and outermost positions; The collar or sleeve arms and the fingers are so shaped and connected that upon the inward movement of the collar or sleeve upon the hub toward the back of the reel the fingers are caused to be moved to a horizontal position, or one that brings their surfaces d in line with or slightly within the line of the surface of the barrel,

and this is the position which they occupy in placing a full coil of wire upon the barrel. To secure the coil on the barrel, the collar or sleeve is moved outwardly toward the front end of the hub, and this causes the fingers'to be turned a quarter and moved from their horizontal position to a position which is radial to the hub and barrel, and thereby hold the coil of wire on the barrel against the back plate of the reel.

The advantages of the invention arise from the cheapness'of the construction and from the fact that all the fingers are simultaneously turned or operated into'a position to permit the placing of the coil upon the barrel and afterward lockedin position by a single latching or locking device.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, in a reel for nailing and other machines, of the barrel, the back fiange,'and the reel-hub, all of integral formation, a slide sleeve or collar mounted upon said hub and having arms, and fingers pivotally mounted on the barrel and movably connected to said collar or sleeve arms, as and for the purposes described.

2. The combination, in a reel for nailing and other machines, of the barrel, its flange and hub of integral formation, fingers pivoted to the barrel, a slide sleeve orcollar mounted on the hub of the barrel and having arms connected with said fingers, and a latching device for locking the collar at the end of its inward and outward movements, as and for the purposes described.
