- G. PEEPLES.
ATTACHING- DEVICE FOR ELECTRIC LIGHT FIXTURES.
Patnted May 2, 1893.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE PEEPLES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE THAOKARA MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHING DEVICE FOR ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTU RES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,792, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed November 19,1892. Serial No. 452,542. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE PEEPLES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attaching Devices for Electric Light Fixtures, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a novel device for attaching an electric light fixture to a wall, ceiling or other place of service, the same embodying a plate with converging arms, a collar at the place of'convergence having longir 5 tudinal recesses in the walls thereof, and transverse recesses in the back thereof, whereby the end of the arm of the fixture may be passed through said collar and seated thereon.
Figure 1 represents a partial side view and partial section of an electric light fixture and an attaching device embodying my invention, said section being taken on theline :0, m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the attaching device. Fig. 3 represents a front 2 5 view of said device. Fig. 4 represents a rear View thereof. Fig. 5 represents a rear view of the end of the arm of the fixture.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates an electric light fixture having at the rear end of the arm thereof the sleeve B with radial lugs B thereon, said fixture in other respects being of well known form and construction.
V O designates an annulus or annular plate on the front face of which are the set out converging arms D, said plate being attachable to a wall, ceiling, &c. At the place of con vergance of said arms is a collar E, the walls of which are longitudinally recessed at opposite places as at F. On the rear face of said collar are transverse recesses G, which are placed at an angle to said recesses F.
The operation is as follows: The lugs B are passed through the collar E and recesses F, and after they clear the inner end of said collar, the fixture is turned so that the lugs register with the recesses G, the fixture then being drawn forward so that said lugs are seated in said recesses G. The collar E is provided with screws H which are now passed through the sleeve B against the arm of the fixture, whereby the latter is prevented from turning or displacement from the collar E, and it is firmly and nicely held in position. In order to remove the fixture, the screws H are loosened, the fixture pushed rearward through the collar E until the lugs B clear said collar, when the fixture is rotated until the lugs register with the recesses F, after which the fixture is drawn'forward and it may be entirely withdrawn from said collar, and the parts accordingly separated. Owing to the spaces between the arms D, the electric wires that pass through the fixture rearward are readily accessible.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A plate having converging arms set out therefrom, and a central collar joining said arms, the inner wall of said collar having longitudinally extending recesses, and the back of the same transversely extending recesses, said recesses being at an angle to each other, substantially as described.
2. An electric light fixture having lugs thereon in combination with a collar on the arms of an attaching plate having longitudinally and transversely extending recesses respectively in the inner wall thereof and back of the same for the passage and seating of lugs on the said fixture, and screws passing through said collar adapted to tighten against said fixture substantially as described.
