. I 6440444421 1 I I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' GEORGE F. STEESE, OF AKRON, OHIO.
STOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,046, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed July 1, 1891. Serial No. 398,155- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. STEEsE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in stools adapted more particularly for store and lunch counter uses or purposes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved store and lunch counter stool. Fig. 2 is a sectional e1evation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View thereof, showing the stool-seat disposed in a vertical position; and Fig. at is a side elevation of a modification of my stool as adapted more especially for lunch or high counters.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a base or bracket A, adapted to be secured to the front of the counter down near or at the floor and having lower and upper pieces or boards a a, the lower piece or board extending some distance outward beyond the upper board or piece.
B is a preferably right-angled socket-casting having its horizontal arm or portion 19 resting upon the lower piece or board a and projecting under the upper piece or board a, its extreme inner end being pivoted, as at b, to said board to permit the movement horizontally of said socket-casting in an arc. At its angle the socket-casting B is provided with a truck or .caster b resting on the floor for sustaining the weight superposed thereon by the occupant of the seat. The horizontal arm or portion 1) is provided with a springpressed catch or detent a adapted to engage notches a in the board a, and thus retain the socket-casting with the standard and seat at the desired angle.
O is the standard having its lower end fitting in the vertical or socket portion 13 of the casting 13, within which it is adj ustably held by a set or holding screw 0, permitting the raising or lowering of the seat according to the height of the counter. The upper end of the standard 0 is enlarged and provided with a socket (1, into which is revolubly fitted the reduced portion 6 of a short post E, having interposed between the circular shoulders 6' produced by its reduced portion and the upper enlarged socketed end of the standard 0 a packing or washer f, a packing f also being inserted in the bottom of the socket d. These packings or washers relieve the post of undue friction or wear and provide for facility of movement thereof as the seat is turned, as will be readily understood. The post E has an annular or circumferential groove g therein, receiving a retaining thumb-screw g to prevent upward displacement and yet allow the post to revolve. v
F is the seat mounted upon the post E and having a hinged or pivotal connection h with the upper end thereof to permit the throwing up or disposing vertically alongside of the counter of the seat out of the Way when not in use.
H is a sleeve or cylinder fitted and adapted to turn upon the post and having opposite slots h, adapted to register with a correspond ing slot in the post E, so that when said sleeve or cylinder is turned so that its slots shall be out of correspondence with the slot of the post it will retain the seat horizontal. WVhen the sleeve or cylinder H is turned, so that its slots shall register with the slot in the post E,
the seat can be tilted or disposed, as above noted, and for the purposes stated.
- In the modification as disclosed in Fig. 4: the standard has connected to it a step-like arm I, having the spring-pressed catch or detent a as above pointed out, for the purpose there disclosed.
The step-like arm I is inpractice provided with a cross-piece adapted to serve as a footrest t' for the occupant of theseat, especially as desirable with high or lunch counters.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim The combination, with the base or bracket having the interspaced semicircular pieces a a, of the stool comprising the standard C, having the upper tubular portion, the seat F, tiltingly held in the upper end of a short post,
itself revolnbly held in the tubular portion of said standard, the casting 15, having a vertical socket portion b to receive the lower end of the said standard and supported upon a caster-Wheel or truck jonrnaled in its lower end, and the right-angled or step-like bracket or arm having pivotal connection with the base, and a spring catch or detent adapted to engage with a series of radial notches in the said base, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE F. STEESE.
