NITED STATES PATENT STEAM-GENERATOR FOR VAPOR-BATHS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,939, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed October 10, 1890. Renewed May 1, 1891. Serial No. 391,176. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, CLARK CADY, of Waldron, in the county of l lillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Generator for Vapor-Baths, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrlptlon.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved generator for conveniently and rapidly generating steam for use in bathing apparatus adapted for bathing the whole or a part of the human body.
The invention consists of a water-receptacle held on top of a plug provided with a steam-compartment and adapted to be heated and a pipe passing through the said waterreceptacle into the hollow plug and provided with ports to connect or disconnect the said water-receptacle with or from the said steamcompartment.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a reduced side elevation of the improvement as applied to a bath for the entire human body; and Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of bathing apparatus for diiferent parts of the human body, showing the connection with the generator.
The improved steam-generator is provided with an open water-receptacle A, secured on the upper end of the plug B, preferably pointed at its lower end and formed in its interior with a steam-compartment 0. Into the top of the plug B screws a pipe D, provided near its lower end with a series of ports E, which serve to connect the water-receptacle A with the steam-compartment C. The ports E are formed lengthwise on the pipe D, and when the latter is screwed down in the plug B the water-receptacle A is disconnected from the steam-compartment O. WVhen the operator screws the pipe D outward, then the ports E extend their upper ends gradually into the water-receptacle A, so that the water in the latter can flow through the ports into the steam-compartment C. The operator can thus regulate the flow to cause a fast or slow flowing of the water from the Water-receptacle to the steam-compartment O to generate steam slowly or quickly, as desired. The outer end of the pipe D is connected by a flexible tube F with the bathing apparatus G, of any approved construction. As shown in Fig.3, the pipe F is connected with a bathing apparatus for the entire human body. As illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the said bathing apparatus consists .of an open box into which leads the tube F, which is applied with its open end to the part of the human body to be treated with a vapor-bath.
The device is used as follows; The waterreceptacle A is filled with water, the pipe D being screwed downward, so as to disconnect the water-receptacle A from the steam-compartment O. The plug B is now subjected to heat either on an ordinary cooking-stove, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or by other suitable means. \Vhen the plug gets about red-hot, the operator slightly turns the pipe D so that the upper ends of the ports E open into the water-receptacle A to permit the water to drip into the hot steam-compartment C, so that the water is quickly generated into steam, which passes through the pipe D into the tube F and from the latter into the respective bathing apparatus G. The operator by turning the pipe D more or less in or out can regulate the generating of the steam to suit himself. If it is desired to cool the steam passing through the tube F, the device H may be provided, which is inserted in the outer end of the tube F and is provided with a Wire-net ting I, supporting a sponge J, and formed at its outer end with a cap K, having an outletnozzle L. The wire-nettin g I, with the sponge, is inserted in the open end of the tube F, so that the steam has to pass through the sponge before reaching the cap K to pass through the nozzle L into the bathing apparatus.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patent 1. A steam-generator for Vapor-baths, comprising a water-receptacle, a plug carrying the said Water-receptacle and provided with a steam-compartment and a pipe passing through the water-receptacle and screwing into the said plug to connect with the said steam-con1part1nent, substantially as shown and described.
i2. A steam-generator for vapor-baths, comprising a water-receptacle, a plug carrying the said Water-receptacle and provided with a steam-compartment, and a pipe passing through the water-receptacle and screwing into the said plug to connect with the said steam-compartment, the said pipe being provided with ports adapted to connect the said water-receptacle with the said steam compartinent, substantially as shown and described.
In a steam-generator for vapor-baths, a cooling device comprising a Wire -netting, sponge held in the said wire-netting, and a cap held on one end of the said wire-netting and provided with a nozzle, substantially as shown and described.
4. A steam-generator for vapor-baths, COlI1 prising a water-receptacle, a plug carrying the said water-receptacle and provided with a steam-compartment, a pipe passing through the said water-receptacle into the said plug to connect with the steain-coinpartment, the said pipe being provided with ports adapted bathing apparatus, substantially shown and described.
5. A steani-generator for vapor-baths, COHP' prising a Water-receptacle, a plug carrying the said water-receptacle and provided with a steai'n-coinpartment, a pipe passing through the said water-receptacle into the said plug to connect with the steain-conipartinent, the said pipe being provided With ports adapted to connector disconnect the said water-receptacle with or from the said steam-compartment, a flexible tube extending from the said pipe and adapted to connect with the bathing apparatus, and a steam-cooling device fitted in the end of the said flexible tube and comprising a wire-netting, sponge contained in the wire-netting, and a cap held on the wirenetting, substantially as shown and described.
