L. B. KOHN, 'PRUIT' JAB; LIFTER.
No. 463,811. Patented Nov. 24, 1891.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEY.
NIE
LOUIS B. KOHN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
FRUIT-JAR LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,811, dated November 24,1891.
Application filed September 9, 1891.
.To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS B. KOHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, and State of Maryland, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wire-frame lifter f or fruit-jars.
In the process of preserving fruits, vegetables, 850., in sealed jars it is necessary to immerse the jar containing ,the fruit in hot water, whereby the cooking is effected before sealing. As the jars thus become too hot to be handled conveniently, some means is desirable to facilitate the handling while the cap is being adjusted or while its top is being sealed.
The object of my invention is to provide this desideratum.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 shows a jar supported in this improved lifter, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the lifter.
The jar-lifter is preferably made of stiit' wire and comprises the bail-piece A and the combined transverse foot piece and ring which unites with the first-named piece. It also has a second ring. The bail-piece A forms the handle or bail a, and each downward arm a of the bail at its lower end is doubled back, as at b, to form a foot 12'. From the doubled-back part b of the two feet each end projects horizontally, as at c, to the center, where the extremities (Z are secured to the horizontal part c of the transverse footpiece.
The transverse foot-piece and ring B comprise two vertical arms f, each of which is connected with a horizontal seat. part e, before named, bya doubled-back foot g, formed like the feet attached to the bail-piece. The ring h is integrally connected with the upper extremity f of one of the vertical arms f and is bent laterally therefrom and curves to form the ring h, the extremity of which connects by a hook end 72/ with the said upper extremity f. The upper extremity of the other vertical arm f has a hook end f which connects with the ring h. This ring also connects with the two downward arms a of the bail-piece. A secondring I is united Serial No. 405,168. (No model.)
with the downward arms a of the bail and also with the two vertical arms f. It will be seen that the horizontal parts a of the bailpiece and the horizontal part c of the transverse .foot-piece extend in directions crosswise of each other and form an elevated seat on which the fruit-jars may sit, as shown in Fig. 1, while the ring it confines the said jar to its seat. At the same time the bail a projects above the top of the jar and serves as a handle, by means of which a hot jar can readily be lifted out of the hot bath and handled while the cap is being adjusted or while the top is being sealed.
The extremities of the wire (designated (1,
f and t") are connected by hooked ends.
These may also be secured by solder. Small wire clips j are also shown. It is unimportant whether more than the one ring his used. In the present instance two are shown.
The j ar-lifter thus made is simple, cheap to construct, handy to use, and is also durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A fruit-jar lifter comprisinga bail-piece whose two downward arms a at their lower ends are doubled back to form feet I) with an elevated horizontal seat part c, a transverse foot-piece having two vertical arms f, an elevated horizontal seat part a, crossing the horizontal seat part of the bail-piece and doubledback feet g, and a ring uniting the said vertical arms f and downward arms a, substantially as set forth.
2. A fruitjar lifter comprisinga bail-piece whose two downward arms a at their lower ends have a horizontal seat part, a transverse seat-piece crossing the horizontal seat part of the bail-piece and having two vertical arms f,and a horizontal ring h integral with the upper extremity of one of the said vertical arms and connected by a hook with the upper extremity of the other vertical arm and by suitable means with the said two downward arms.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in I 00
