WILLIAM H. KOLLMAN, OF BELLE PLAINE, IOWA.
CANNING APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application led December 20, 1917. Serial No. 208,087.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KoLL- MAN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Belle Plaine, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Canning Appliances; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters or igures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same in place in the boiler.
The invention has relation to appliances to facilitate the canning of fruits and vegetables, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates lower foot pieces, four in number and located respectively opposite each other, in pairs, at the two ends and two sides of the device, each foot piece of strap metal having a horizontal top 3, downwardly bent sides 4 and inturned bottoms 5.
Resting upon each foot piece is a standard 6, there being four standards in all, and resting upon the standards and secured thereto is a flat upper plate 7, having openings or holes 8 of suitable size to receive neatly the common glass fruit jars, designated 9, there being usually seven holes, to receive seven jars.
Resting upon the foot pieces and located between the same and the lower ends of the standards is a lower fiat perforated or screen member 10, of similar shape to the upper plate 7, each conforming in shape to the in terior horizontal cross-section of a wash boiler.
At each end of the device is an upwardly extending handle 11, of wire, bent centrally thereof at 12, horizontally, and engaging the perforations of the tubular handle pieces 13,
the branches 14; of the wire extending downwardly and engaging perforations 15 of the plate 7, adjacent to the end standards, and belng continued downwardly to the end foot pieces, around which the lower ends of the wire are bent at 16.
In the use of this device, the foot pieces resting upon the bottom of the boiler will elevate the screen member, whereon the jars rest, above the bottom of the boiler, so that the heat from the stove upon which the boiler rests will be prevented from breaking the jars, owing to the space or interval 17 between the bottom of the boiler and the screen member, the latter allowing free circulation of the water being heated around the jars. Direct transmission of heat through the bottoms of the boiler and of the can or jar, with consequent burning of the food, is also avoided.
The suitably filled jars are placed in the device, which is then lowered into the boiler by the handles, the latter admitting of ready removal of the device and jars from the boiler.
I claim:
A canning appliance consisting of lower foot pieces having horizontal tops, downwardly bent sides and inturned lower portions, ahorizontal perforated receptacle sup port resting upon said foot pieces, vertical standards resting upon said perforated member immediately above said foot pieces, an upper plate located upon and secured to said standards and having openings to receive the canning receptacles and end perforations, and upwardly extending wire handles having each an upper central horizontal portion, downwardly extending branches spaced apart by the diameter of the end standards and engaging the perforations of Said plate and coiled at their lower ends around the horizontal tops of said foot pieces.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. KOLLMAN.
