UNITED STATES I PATE T OFFICE.
GEORGE BUZZELL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS,ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK O. BUZZELL, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,784, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed March 20, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BUZZELL, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Trenches, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe-wrench; Fig. 2, an edge elevation of the same; and Fig. 3, aside elevation of the jaws represented as in use, the handle and a portion of one of the straps being represented as broken away.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to that class of wrenches known as pipe-wrenches? and it consists inv certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the wrench, and B the handle; 0, the fixed jaw, and D the movable jaw. The body A comprises a flattened bar screw-threaded at b on opposite faces, and secured by ordinary means in the wooden handle B. The fixed jaw O has a serrated head (I and a shank f, which is pivoted at g to the body A to swing in one direction or from left to right, as viewedin Fig. 1. A rosette or nut his mounted to travel on the body A, and carries with ita strap t, encircling said body and inclosing said nut. The movable jaw D is pivoted to swing vertically in said strap at j, and has a serrated head It. A strap m is pivoted to the head it of the movable jaw and encircles the shank fof the fixed jaw, said strap being fitted to slide freely on said shank and of suitable length to permit the swinging of the shank Serial No. 385,754. (No model.)
therein. Below the pivot j the movable jaw is extended slightly downward or provided with a projection 19, which is adapted to engage a jam-nut h when the head 7c of said jaw is thrown outward.
In the use of my improvement the wrenchjaws are adjusted by means of the nut h, in
the usual manner, until their heads d 70, re-
spectively, engage the pipe H. By moving the handle B downward or from left to right,as
viewed in Fig. 1, the pivot g is caused to swing outward, inclining the shank f, as shown in Fig. 3, and causing the jaws to bite tightly against the pipe. By reciprocating the handle the jaw 0 again assumes an upright position, as shown in Fig. 1, enabling a new hold to be quickly obtained. The swing of the jaw D in clamping said jaws on the pipe causes its projection 19 to jam against the nut 71-, preventing said nut from accidentally traveling on the screw and obviating the necessity of constant readjustment of the jaws.
By pivoting the movable jaw and fixed jaw to swing in different arcs from the body A, as 75 shown, a greater leverage is attained than when said fixed jaw is formed integral with the handle, as in wrenches of this classof ordinary construction, the bite of the jaws on the pipe increasing proportionately to the be omitted, the j aw being prevented from falling too far outward by the engagement of said projection 10 with the nut h.
. Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a pipe-wrench, a threaded body and 0 rosette, in combination with a jaw pivoted to said body and a pivoted jaw fitted to travel on said body, substantially as described.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the combination of a body with a jaw pivoted thereon and a jaw 9 5 pivoted in a support fitted to slide on said body, substantially as described.
3. In a pipe-wrench, a threaded body, a nut fitted to travel thereon, and a sleeve or strap carried by said nut, in combination with a mo jaw pivoted to said body, and a jaw pivoted in said strap, substantially as described.
4. In a pipe-wrench, the body and nut, in combination with a pivoted movable jaw having a fulcrum-support fitted to travel on said body, a jaw provided with a shank pivoted to said body, and a strap on said movable jaw encircling said shank, substantially as specified.
5. In a pipe-Wrench, the body A and nuth, in combination with the jaw O, pivoted to said body, and the j aw D, pivoted in the strap '17, to fitted to slide on said body, and provided with the projection 19 in position to engage said nut, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
