A. M. BAGHELDER & 'L. B. GARRETT. LAWN MOWER SHARPENER.
No. 463,676. Patented Nov. 24, 1891 Nrrnn [STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED M. BAOHELDER AND LINCOLN B. GARRETT, OF ROCKFORD,
I ILLINOIS.
LAWN-MOWER S HARPEN ER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 463,676, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed September 21, 1891. Serial No. 406,409. (No model.)
To all whom it may OOH/0077b.
Be it known that we, ALFRED M. BACHEL- DER and LINCOLN B. GARRETT, citizens of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Mower Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improved implement for sharpening lawn-mowers; and it consists of certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an isometric view of a lawn-mower and our invention, showing the manner in which the latter is operated. to sharpen the former. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are respectively a top plan view, a side elevation, and a bottom plan View of our invention.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A is the foundation-piece of the sharpener. A is a slot therein allowing the passage of screw-heads therethrough when the sharp ener is used on a lawn-mower having a bedpiece screwed thereon, which bed piece is utilized as a way for the sharpener to slide upon instead of an axle, as in Fig. 1.
B is a file-clamp connected with its foundation-piece A by means of longitudinal slots l3therein,andscrews B insertedtherethrough in such a manner that they may be longitudinally adjusted to each other. Evidently, however, the foundation-piece A and clamp B might be formed in a single piece and be equally operative, though less. convenient. We therefore do not desire to limit ourselves to the construction composed of two parts.
B is a thumb-screw for adjusting the'clamp B to the foundation-piece A.
B is 2. lug, which is preferably integral with and a prolongation of the part B.
O is a file secured to the part A by means of the clamp B.
D is a lug projecting from the foundationpiece A.
It is essential to the successful operation of the sharpener that there should be a pro jection of some kind on each side of the file O, as B D, one to turn a knife E of the lawnmower forward as the file passes along its edge, and the other to turn it backward as the sharpener is returned to the point from whence it was started to operate. Obviously it is not material what form is given to these necessary projections or lugs, or whether they are integral withor only secured to the sharpener, so long as they are arranged to reciprocate along the knives in the manner already described. It is also equally obvious that the file-clamp B might be operated in other ways than that shown without departin g from the spirit and scope of our invention.
F is a guide for adjusting the sharpener to lawn-mowers of varying sizes. This guide glides along the back edge of the bed-piece in mowers having bed-pieces, and along the mower-axle in mowers nothaving bed-pieces, of which class Fig. 1 is a representation. The guide F is adjustable by means of a slot F therein and a set-screw F inserted therethrough.
The sharpener is operated by sliding it back and forth while in the posit-ion shown in Fig. 1, and thereby causing the file O to traverse and retraverse the entire length of the edge of each knife of thelawn-mower until the requisite degree of sharpu ess is attained.
We claim-.
I. In a lawn-mower sharpener, in combination, the foundation-piece, the file-clamp, the file, and the lugs or projections for turning the lawn-mower knives backward and forward while they are being sharpened, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a lawn-mower sharpener, in combination, the foundation-piece, the file-clamp, the file, the lugs located on each side of said file for turning the lawn-mower knives backward and forward while they are undergoing the operation of being sharpened, and the adjusting-guide, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ALFRED M. BAOHELDER. LINCOLN B. GARRETT.
