Description

J. H. BALSLEY.
Tobacco Drier.
N0. 46,323. 1 Patented Feb 14, 1865.
. UNTED STATES A'IENI FFICE JOHN H. BALSLEY, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR DRYING TOBACCO.
Specilleation formlng part 0f Letters Patent N0. 46,323, dated February 14, 1865.
T0 all whom 1125 7nay concern:
Be lt known that I, J onn H. BALSLEY, of
Dayton, Montgomery eounty, State 0f Ohio,"
belng had t0 the aeeompanylng drawlngs,mak-
ing a part 0f thls speelficatlon, in wllieh Flgure 1 ls a side Vlew 0f n1y machlne arranged for operatlon. Flg. 2 ls a longitudinal sectlon taken in a vertical plane through the center 0f my maehine. Flg. 3 ls a vertical eross-sectlon taken through Flgs. 1 and 2 at the polnt lndieated by red llne x x.
Similar letters 0f referenee lndlcate eorrespon dlng parts in the three figures.
'Ihls inventlon ls an improvement in maehlnery for dresslng and drylng fine and com- 1non eut tobaeco, whereby I subj eet the tobacco to an elevatlng, agitati'ng, and separatlng actlon, and at the same tlme subjeet lt to the acti0n of eurrents of alr, whieh ls rarefied by natural 0r artlfieial means, and ls free t0 absorb molsture, as will be herelnafter descrlbed.
Another objeet 0f my inve;gtlon ls t0' comblne wlth a tobacco drylng and dresslng maehine certain means by whieh I am enabled to separate tl1e fine partieles 0f tobaeeo er trash from the goodstock during the operatlon of dresslng or drylng ehewlng-tobaeeo, as will be hereinafter deserlbed.
'I0 enable others skllled in the art t0 make and use my invention, I Will desdrlbe lts construetlon and operatlon.
In the aecompanylng drawlngs, A represents the maln frame of the maehlne, whleh ls coustructed in such manner as to support within lt a large revolvlng cyllnder, B, whleh extends horlzontally from one end 0f sald frame to the other, as shown in Flgs. 1 and 2. 'Ihls cyllnder ls snpportedin its frarne Aby means 0f a neutral shaft, O, whleh is seonred to tl1e eylln'- der by the radial arrns a a, to the ends 0f whleh latter slots b b are affixed, earrylng on their lnner edges a number 01" hooked fingers, c c, arranged as shown in Figs 2 and 3, and curved in such manner that when the eyllnder ls rotated they will elevate the tobaeeo, 0pen lt, and thus expose lt t0 the infiuence 0f eurrents 0f alr whleh readlly absdrbs molsture, whlch ehlne. 'Ihis apron ls lntended to eonduct the tobaeco whleh ls t0 be dried lnto the forward end 0f the eylinder B and leave lt thereln, and f0r thls purpose the rear end 0f the apron E projeets through the partltlon a and enters the eylinder B a short distance, as sl1own in Flg. 2.
The fan-box may be eonstruct'ed in any Suitable manner whlch may be fonnd best adapted orforclng enrrents 0f alr throngh the cyllner B.
The box F represented in the drawlngs l1as a fan, F, arranged withln lt, whieh ls rot-ated by means 0f a belt er cord passlng from a pulley on the maln shaft A 0ver a pulley on the fan-shaft. The alr ls drawn into the fan-box through openlngs in lts sldes andforeed from thls box th1ough a eontraeted mouth lntoand through the cyllnder B. The partition a at the forward end of the frame A eloses the forward end of tl1e eyllnder B, and thus prevents any of the stoek fron1 eseaplng at thls polnt; but the opposlte end of this cyllnder 1's left open, so that the stoek, as well as the eurrents of alr, Wlll have a free esea'pe therefrom.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have represented a cyllndrlcal screen, G, applled t0 the rear end 0f the cyllnder B, so as t0 form a art 0f thelatter. 'Ihis eylindrleal screen G may be applled to tl1e eylinder B by forming large openlngs in lts sldes near lts rear end, and coverlng these openlngs with screen-wirre, as shown in the drawlngs; 01, lf deslrable, a eyllndrleal screen may be applled t0 the cyllnder, so as 110 forr n a eontlnuatlon thereof. 'Ihe objeet 0f this screen G is to allow the fine partlcles 0f tobaeco toeseape durlng the operatlon of drylng ehewlng-tobacco, and when lt ls not deslred to use thls screen lt ls eovered by a slldlng eyllnder, J, surroundlng the cyllnder B, as shown in Flgs. 1 and 2.
The operatlon 0f my lnventlonls as follows':
Motion js imparted 130 the main driving:shafb A, andfrom this shaft a rotayry mobion is commpnieated 130 the driving-roller of the apron E, and t0 the fzm-shafb, and also 110 the eylinder B, all moving in the direetion indicated by the arrgws in Figs. 2 and' 3. 'Ihe tobacco is conductd from the cubingmachine and de-.
posited upon the endless apron E, which latter conveys it int0 bhe cylinder B. Hera the tobacco is tossed and shaken apart by mean's of the hooks 01' fingers 0 c, and ab the Same time subjected 130 strong ourrents 0f air, Which deprivesit 0f its moisture, am]. also impels it y toward the rear end of the cylinder.
By my improved machine the operation -0f opening or.disintegrating the tangled stock is efiectually performed .With0l1b the aid of man- 1 11211 1abor, and While thi-s operation proceeds the stoek is in a suit ble condition 110 be rapidly dried bythe currents of air f013eed through In some kinds of stock it is desired t0separate the fine trash fr0m it, and 130 this end the screen G, above deseribed, isbrought int0 operationby sliding back the cylindrical jacket J, and thus uncovering the screen.
I Will state that I use hob air when nhe atmosphere is not expanded enough without such breatmenb.
1 use any 0f the 01d means of expanding the air, such as inclosing a stove in a sma1l r00m 01 ir0n case and drawing the air from it with the fan, whieh is eonnected 110 the inachine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire 130 secure by Letters Patent, is
'1.A maehine, constructed a herein described, for subjecting fine -and common cut WVitness myl1and inmatter 0f myapplication for apate nt; for improved tobaeeo-Qrier. JOHN H. 'BA'LSLEY Winesses:
JOHN H. STOPPELMANN, O. A. J. CRAMER.
