Description

Nirnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILIAM .T. MAYER, OF CHICAGO, IINOIS.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,846, dated November 10, 1891.
Application filed February 11, 1890. Serial No. 339,979. (No model) ters Patent No. 31 .3,099, and has for its object to provide means for adjnsting' the weight-` bar in balancing the bed.
No change is made in the construction set forth in the hercin-referred-to patent,the improved features of this invention being silnply added. The description will therefore be confined to the new 'features and the parts related thereto.
Figure l is a broken-away Vertical section in plane l, Fig'. 2, lookingin the direction indicated by the arrow; Fix. 2, a horizonta-l section in plane 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached detail showing` one of the movement-levers in section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the inclosing' case or cabinet, l B the side rails, and B', the head-board. The two levers C C are placed on each side of the bed between the rails and the sides of the inclosing,1 case, as shown in Fig. 2. Theinner or bearin` ends of the movement-levers are provided with the diagonal notch or recess a. The bearing-pins a' a' are rigidly secured in the inclosing` case and pass through the inoveinent-Ievers C C and support the front ends of the same in proper relation thercto. The pivot-pins C02 (L2 engage loosely with the diagonal notch or notches a. The rear end of the levers O C are turned inwardly at right angles and are rigidly secured to the transverse weight-bar D by the bolts (L3, as shown in Fig'. 2. The braeket-plates b l) are rigidly secured by the screws b' to the rear side and ends of the head-board. These plates are provided on their lower ends with the laterally-projecting lug 192, (see Fig's. l and 3,) which is screwthreaded foi` the reception of the correspondin gly screw threaded adj usti n g bo] ts (Z, the
upper ends of which bear against the under side or edge of the moveinent-levers C O, whereby said levers and the Weight-bar D, secured to the rear ends of the same, may be raised or lowered for the purpose of balancing the bed without adding to or rernoving` any of the weights. By this arrangement the movement of the bed can be conveniently regulated to a nicety and prevented from closing,` with a slam or dropping too heavily when opened out.
Folding beds without means for maintaining' a proper balance generally close With sufficient jar to force ont the lower front of the inclosing` case.
E represents the weights on the weight-bar;
In each of the respective lower corners of the inclosing case are rigidly secured the angle-braces F, which serve to stiffen and greatly strengthen the structure with reference to the movement of the bed proper.
The Companion bars g, Fig. 1, are pivoted to the respective interior sides of the casing,` and may be turned upwardly to engage with the under side of the weight-bar, as indicated in dotted lines, to lock the bed in its open position and also to relieve the bearings of undue stran.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
i. [n a folding bed, the combination, with the stationary section or inclosing case, of the folding' section, the Companion inovement-levers located at each side in a horizontal plane between the case and folding` section and having a pivotal connection at their front ends with both, the transverse weight-bar located back of the folding section, to which the rear an gle ends of the moveinent-levers are bolted, and the vertically-arranged adjusting-bolts secured to the head end of the folding sections and bearingag'ainst the under side of said lever, whereby the weight-bar may be raised or lowered with reference to the center of equilibrium, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a folding bed, the combination, with the stationary and folding sections, of the horizontal movement-levers located at each side of the bed and between said Sections and having a pivotal connection with each, the
