UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE;
VILLIAM R. FORBIS, OF GREENSBOROUGH, NORTH CAROLINA.
CABlNET-BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,695, dated November 10, 1891.
Application filed June 4, 1891. Serial No. 396,099. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. FoRBIs, a citizen of the United States,residin g at Greensborough, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Cabinet-Bedstead, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the legs of V cabinet-bedsteads; and the ob jects in view areto provide a leg of cheap and simple construction, which will fall automatically into operative position when the bed is lowered for use and become locked, and which may be withdrawn from view and automatically unlocked for this purpose when the bed is raised to a closed position, whereby the unsightly folding legs found in most cabinetbeds are avoided.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of the upper portion of a bed stead of the class described, the same being provided with my improved leg. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the side rail of the bedstead, the leg being lowered into operative position. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4; is a similar view, the bedstead being elevated.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the usual cabriiet or casing, between the opposite walls of which there is located and supported in the usual manner the side rails 2, which are connected by the foot-board 3 and at their lower corners adjacent to the board provided with boxes 4, which boxes have longitudinal rectangular openings 5.
6 designates a housing formed of cast metal and comprising a segmental-shaped portion 7 near its front end, which latter is mounted upon a longitudinal portion 8, the portion 8 being L-shaped in cross-section, forming a way in conjunction with the foot-board of the bed and rail 2 and being in line with the opening 5 of the box. The lower or horizontal portion of the way is notched or provided with an opening 10 at the top of the housing, through which communication between the edge is provided with a tenon 12, adapted to take into a recess 13, formed in the edge of the foot-board 3. At intervals the horizontal portion of the guide or way is provided with perforated ears 13, adapted to receive screws by which the casting may be secured to the inner surface of the side rail of a bedstead.
Mounted in the way 8 and in the opening 5 of the box is the sliding leg 14:, which leg terminates at its outer end in a foot 15 and at its rear end enlarged to form astop 1.6. A bolt 17 passes through the side wall of the segmental-shaped portion of the housing, and upon the sameis loosely mounted a segmentalshaped gravity-latch 18, from the rounded portion of which extends a looking-lug 19, adapted, when the housing is in a vertical position, to fall by gravity and project through the opening 10, formed in the now vertical portion of the way.
In operation by lowering the bedstead to a horizontal position each leg slides from its way through the opening in its box until its stop comes into contact with the upper face of the box and the gravity segmental-shaped latch automatically swings to a vertical position, the lug of the latch being thrown forward through the opening in the wall of the way and into the path of the leg in rear of the stop of the same, so that the leg is locked against an upward movement, and hence acts as a support for the foot portion of the bed. By swinging the side rails of the bedstead to a vertical position the legs, it will be observed, are brought to a horizontal position, so that the gravity-latches falling to vertical positions withdraw their locking-lugs from behind the legs, and the latter may be pushed back by hand within the ways, leaving merely the feet visible. By forming the feet of brass or other bright and attractive metal and of any desired design the same assume the ap-- neled upon their opposite faces, as at 20, so as to lend lightness, said channels receiving the lugs 11, formed upon the inner faces of the housings, the lugs acting as guides to the legs in their movements in and out of the housings.
lowered for use, and of automatically unlock ing said legs when the bedstead is raised, so that they may be pushed by hand into their respective ways, and when so pushed have the appearance of ordinary designswith which such cabinets are usually decorated.
Having described my invention, what I I claim is The combination, with the cabinet-bedstead embodying the pivoted opposite side rails and connecting foot-board, of the herein-described attachment, consisting of the cast-metal housing, L-shaped in cross-section,provided at its edges with perforated screw-receiving securing-ears and fitted in the corner of the bedframe, said housing being provided at one side with the segmental -shaped offset, the gravity-leg loosely mounted for reciprocation in the Way and provided with longitudinal channels, the segmental-shaped. gravity-latch pivoted in the offset and provided at its inner edge and at its free end with a locking-lug adapted to swing through an opening formed in the Wall of the housing, and the guide-lug formed on the inner face of the way of the housing and entering the channel of the leg, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. FORBIS.
