IMPROVVEM ENT' IN WARDROBE-BEDSTEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,728, dated May 14, 1878; application filed January 16, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. HALL, of Oincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Folding Bedstead, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to improvements in those pieces of furniture in which a bedstead is capable of being compactly folded within a case or shell, which, besides constituting a portion of the bedstead, serves, when folded, to both hide the other parts and to simulate a sideboard or other article of parlor or diningroom furniture.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, of a bedstead embodying my improvements, the article being shown in its open condition. Fig. 3 is a similar section, and Fig. 4 a perspective view, of the bedstead in its closed condition. llig. 5 is an end elevation of the foot end of the open bedstead.l

Fig. 6 is a perspective view, and Fig. 7 a vertical section, both to an enlarged scale, of the grooved side rail and the stud-projection.

A represents a shell or casing designed to simulate a Asideboard or buffet. The back of the casing is pierced with openings a, in order that the bedding may receive proper ventilation when the article is closed.

B are the side rails, and O is the bottom, of the bedstead proper, D, to which are hinged head and foot extensions J and K.

Pivoted to the bedstead D are two legs, G, which, when closed, as in Fig. 4, become an ornamental cornice or frieze, and, when open, support the foot end of the bedstead, and are held lirmly to this position by the pressure of the unfolded foot-extension K, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 5.

Each side rail has, at its head end, an eXterior groove or channel, b, fora stud or projection, H, attached to the inner wall of the casing. This groove is ordinarily closed by a button, I, which, by preventing the escape of the stud from the groove, prevents the withdrawal of the bedstead proper beyond the position shown in Figs. l and 2.

The parts are so proportioned that, in the extended condition of the bedstead, the free edge of the hinged headdrest J is supported in the up-slanting position indicated in Figs. l and 2, while the hinged foot-extension K, dropping to the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, affords the desired length of bedstead.

A spring, L, of any suitable form and material, insures the automatic opening or unfolding of the head-rest J and its proper bearing against the case-back, as shown in Figs. l and 2,' whenever the bedstead proper is drawn out.

A roller, M, journaled in the extension J, enables its edge to slide freely up and down the inner wall ofthe casing in the acts of opening and closing the bedstead.

The appearance of drawers and of folding doors may be imparted by grooves N, handles O, and simulated hinges P, scutcheons Q, andbeading R.

The handles O aiford a convenient instrumentality for openin g and closing the article.

A curb, S, or other appendage or superstructure, may be attached to or placed upon the case-top.

' The box B B C may be occupied by any suitable bed, as indicated at T in Fig. 3.

The buttons I being turned aside, the bedstead proper may be easily withdrawn from or inserted in the casing, and may, after insertion, be secured against accidental displacement by restoring the buttons to their effective positions, as seen in Fig. 6.

If desired, the stud or projection H may be provided with a roller, to diminish friction, the groove b being made wide enough for that purpose, andthe groove b may be closed at both ends by permanent stops.

I claim as new and of my invention- The improved folding bedstead consisting of case A, having studs H H, the central or body portion B B C, having grooves b b and buttons I I, hinged head-extension J, having rollers M and springs L, hinged footextension K, and pivotedlegs G G, substantially as shown and described.
