PLACE.
IDENTIFICATION-CARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,584, dated November 3, 1891.
Application filed August 23, 1889.
T0 (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PINGUS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Identification-Cards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the arrangement of the means of identification upon an identification-card, so called, and to be used like a passport by travelers and others for the purpose of confirming the personality of the bearer.
The invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a face view of an identificationcard unfolded einbodyin my invention. hi II represents a cross-section thereof. Fig. III represents a perspective view of the folded card and cover.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
The card proper is composed of a sheet of paper which is usually folded into three parts or leaves A 13 C, and attached by one of said leaves, preferably by the middle one, to one side of a two-part folded cover I) for inclosing the card. Said attached middle leaf A of the card is intended to receive a description of the person to be identified, and one outer leaf B to receive Inemoranda, such as the name, &c., of references, while on the other outer leaf C is mounted in any usual or suitable manner a sheet E, containing a photo graph of said person. Said mounted sheet E also contains the written signature of the person represented by the photograph and a certificate of identity signed by a notary public orothor officer and attested by his seal, the whole being integral with said sheet, as shown. sion formed in a well-known manner and is at that part of the photographic sheet E which contains the said written signature, or, in other words, is opposite the signature, thus bringing the latter either partly or wholly The said notarial seal is an impres Serial No. 321,783. (No model.)
within the area of the seal, and inasmuch as the impression has the effect of unfitt-ing the paper to be writtenupon, the signature is thereby practically canceled and an erasure or alteration effectually prevented. Said impression of the seal is formed in the leaf C of 5 the card, as well as the photographic sheet E mounted thereon, causing these two parts to interlock and assume a fixed relation to each other, whereby an attempt to remove the photographic sheet and replace it by another may be at once detected, due to the impracticability of successfully reproducing the characterot' the seal in the substituted sheet.
It should be remarked that instead of a notarial seal any other suitable impression or line of perforations may be employed for effecting the desired purpose.
I am aware of the United States Patent No. 47,798 and the English Patents Nos. 385,
3,365, and 3,557, and I do not claim as my in- "ention the devices shown in either of said patents.
I claim- The identification card herein described,
consisting of the two-part folded cover D tity on said leaf, one outer or detached leaf 8c projecting beyond the contiguous part of the coverand containing menmranda of references, and the other detached leaf being entirely within its contiguous part of the cover,
and a sheet of photographic paper upon said last-named detached leaf containing a photograph of a person, the signature of the person represented, a certificate stating the name of the person represented, and the seal of the otlicer certifying thereto, which is impressed through the photograph, the signa ture of the person represented, the certificate, and the main sheet, substantially as and for the purpose described.
