Description
G. L. LOOHMAN.-
Patented Feb. 7,1866
FUNNEL.
fm W UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
C. L. LOGHMAN, CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
YIMPROVEMENT IN- FUNNELS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, (3.. L. L0cHMAN,'of Oarlisle, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. a new and useful Improvement on aFunnel forFilling Barrels or other Vessels with Fluids; and I do herebydeclare th at the following is aful l, clear, and exact descriptionof the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and, Fig. 2 a perspective view.
To enableothers to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construc-,
tion and operation.
' I construct myvi'unnel in two parts. Both:
have the same general shape, forming, as it were, an outer and an inner tunnel, and when I put together they will leave sufficient space between the two parts for the escape of air as fast as it is displaced by the fluid entering the Ve;sel. v v
The letters ca designate the inner part, and b b the outside one. The projections 40 it an keep the two parts separate.
0 is a valve or stopper, worked by the suding rod and handle l and h. Thesupports it, with the eye p,'keep' the valve rod in its place.
at is a cock or eXit-tlibe,closedwith a stopper in ordinary use. v
g g is a perforated elastic cone, placed over the wider part of the discharge-pipe of the funnel. Said cone or washer is constructed of elastic.materialsueh as rubber, cork, or similar substance. m m are springs or catches to hold the inner part ofthe funnel in its place.
7c is a shoulder on the nipple to guide the valve.
' This funnel may be constructed of any material used for ordinary funnels.
I use my funnel in the following manner: I insert it in a vessel intended to, be filled. The elastic washer g keeps it tightly in its place and prevents the fluid from escaping on its side. The fluid enters the inner part. The air escapes in the directions of the arrows as fast as the fluid enters. When the fluid in the vessel touches the tip or nipple of the funnel, the same begins to fill up, when it is removed bygrasping the handle 11,, which, by the connecting-rod l,with the attached valve 0, closes the funnel, and the fluid is prevented from escaping and being lost. Bygraduating. the pipe b or sliding the washer g the ullage of a vessel may he graduated at pleasure. The cock (I is opened when there is not a constant attention given to the t'unnel,.and by means of a gutter or tube the fluid which would run over in an ordinary funnel when the vessel becomes full issecurcd in aprope-r vessel.
I am aware that double and single glass funnels have been used with the part gground so as to fit tightly the mou'th of a bottle.
which, being part of the funnel and inelastic,
such-construction and arrangement I do not claim; but
What- I claim .as my invention and w'islr to secure by Letters Patent, is
The valve or stopper 0, with its handle and connecting-rod h and Z, or their equivalents, the elastic cone or washer g, or'its equivalent, the cock (1 and springs or catches m m, constructed and connected substantially as and for the purposes specified- Witnesses: C. L. LOCEIMAN.
