NICHOLAS SEDON, OF LETELLIN, CANADA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,332, dated November 3, 1891.
Application filed December 2, 1890. Serial No. 373,331. (No model.)
Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The special object of the invention is to make a device which will enable the brakeman on a car to lift the link so as to readily enter an opposite draw-head without touching it with his hands.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 2,a side elevation; Fig. 3, a front elevation; Fig. 4, a detail iew of the lever, and Fig. 5 a detail view of the linklifter.
In the drawings, A represents the drawhead with the shank a, to be attached to the car, and the jaws a a divergingly inclined on the interior, the lower jaw a being provided with a seat (L in which rests the tongue or link-lifter B, which is rounded at the back, so as to turn in the correspondingly-concaved shoulder a, and tapered toward the front, so as to furnish a downwardly-inclined support for the link when the latter is not to be coupled with the pin of another draw-head.
the back of the link-lifter is made a square hole Z),in which fits the squared part c of the lever C. By turning this lever back by means of its round journals 0 0, whose bearings are in the opposite sides of the draw-head, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the draw- Through ings, the tongue or lifter B raises the link D up to a horizontal position and there holds it until it is coupled with the pin of another draw-head.
My invention is simple, cheap, and thoron ghly effective for its purpose, dispenses with chains, springs, or other devices likely to get out of order, is very durable, will connect with any car using a link and pin, and obviates the necessity of touching the link with the hand. I
I am aware that a hinged tongue in the mouth of a draw-head has been raised by pivoted arms; but these are liable to be thrown down by any jar which the car receives from the road or the impact of another car. Hence I use my bail, one of whose arms is fixed in the tongue and turns in the sides of the drawhead, so that it maybe operated by hand from the platform of car or from the ground, or by a rod or stick from the top of car, either to raise or lower the tongue and to hold it in either position.
hat I claim as new and desire to )rotect by Letters Patent, is
In a car coupling, the tongue 13, having the squared holcb, in combination with the bail 0, having on-one of the outer arms the squared part c, which fits said tongue-hole b, and the journals 0 c, which turn in the sides of the draw-head, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
NICHOLAS SEDON.
