INVENQ MTN EEEEEJ we oms ums no., mam-umn. msnmnvon, n. c.
UNITED STATES HAROLD A. VEBSTER,
OF HAVERHILL, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE H. P. FLAGG, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROTARY BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,655, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed June l, 1891. Serial No. 394,795. (No model.)
of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Brushes,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a brush for cleaning finger-marks and other marks from boots or shoes, which shall be of ro simple and inexpensive construction.
The invention consists of a cloth brush of the improved construction, which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a I5 part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved rag wheel or brush. Fig. 2 represents a similar View, showy ing two of the pieces of cloth forming the outer layer partially turned or bent down to zo show the next layer. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In carrying out my invention I form a rag or cloth wheel by putting together a series of layers of cloth a. Each layer a is composed of a plurality of pieces, each piece forming a section of an annulus-that is, the outer and inner edges of each piece are both curved,
3o and the curves of said edges form arcs of concentric circles. I prefer to make my improved brush with four pieces in each layer.
In forming the brushl I take the various layers of cloth and glue them together at their 3 5 inner edges, the glue preferably extending as far outward as the dotted line shown in Figs. l and 2. It will be seen that this gluing of the layers together at their inner edges forms, as it were, a solid hub a from which the lay- 4o ers project outwardly, each layer being separate and loose from the others at the outer v edge or periphery of the wheel.
In constructing my improved brushI place the successive layers in alternate positions, so as to breakpjoints. In other words, I place the pieces of the lirst layer a so that the divisions between them will be opposite the center, or thereabout, of the pieces of the next layer, and the divisions of the said second layer will consequently be opposite the center of 5o the pieces of the first layer, and so on through the series of layers, no two successive layers having their pieces corresponding. It will also be noted that the pieces of each layer are of such shape as to practically form a eomplete'annulus when laid in place side by side, and care is taken not to have said pieces overlap each other at any point. By attending to this point the wheel is made of a succession of layers of an even thickness, and the said 6o wheel is consequently of the same thickness from side to side at all points. It is not necessary that every layer should beof equalA thickness, as one may be thick and another comparatively thin; but it is desirable that each layer should be of even thickness and not thicker at one point than at another.
This annular brush -is adapted to be slid onto a shaft and to be clamped thereon betweentwo collars, so as to rotate` with said 7o shaft in any suitable way.
Instead of being glued together, the inner portions of the layers may be fastened together by sewing or in any other suitable Way; but glue is preferred.
The invention is not limited to wheels or brushes form ed of cloth, as any other suitable material may be used.
I claim- Theimproved rag wheel or brush hereinbe- 8o fore described, comprising a series of layers of cloth or other suitable material, each layer consisting of a plurality of pieces, each piece forming a part of an annulus, and the whole layer forming a practically compl-ete ann ulus, 8 5 the said layers having their pieces alternately arranged so as to break joints, and all the layers being fastened together at their inner portions, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 9o name to this specification, in the presence ot` two subscribing witnesses, this 21st day of May, A. D. 1891.
HAROLD A. VEBSTER.
