S. J. HARRIS.
DOUBLE ACTION FORGE PUMP.
No. 460,964. Patented Oct. 13, 1891.
W 21% Twvezvm NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SCOTT J. HARRIS, OF ORTONVILLE, IOYVA.
DOU BLE-ACTlON FORCE-PU M P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,964, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed May 1, 1891. Serial No. 391,243. (No model.)
To alt whom, it may concern.-
Be 1t known that I, ScoT'r J. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ortonville, in the county of Dallas and btate of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Double-Action Force-Pump, of which the following is a specification.
. My object is to provide means for forcing a continuous stream of water through a welltube and also of providing a cheap and convenlent supporting-post for the well-tube and the operative parts on the outside of the welltube; and my invention consists in the c011- struction and combination of a supportingpost having a lever or handle fulcrumed in Us top and a submerged force-pump having two sets of valves and two pistons which are alternately reciprocated, as required to force a continuous stream of water through the wel1- tube and pump-spout connected therewith, by means of connecting-rods which are attached to the pistons and to the pump-handle on opposite sides of the supporting-posts in such a manner as to elevate one connectingrod, piston, and set of valves while the other connecting-rod, piston, and set of valves is being lowered, as hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an enlarged detail view of the submerged part of the pump, showing the construction, arrangement, and combination of the pistons and valves with the connectingrods and other parts. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the complete device placed in a well as required for practical use; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the complete device, taken from a point at right angles from Fig. 2.
A is a base, preferably made of cast metal, completein one piece and adapted to allow a supporting-post to be fixed thereto.
B is a supporting-post, preferably made of tubular iron and attached to the base A by means of a screw on its lower end that enters a screw-threaded bore in the base A. It is adapted to support a well-tube and has at its top perforated projections adapted to allow a pumphandle to be fulcrumed thereto.
0 is a pump-handle of common form fulcrumed in the top of the supporting-post B.
D is a well-tube'attached to the supporting post and curved at its top, as required, to form a spout D and its lower end has branches D as required, to connect it with the two valvechambers, as shown in Fig. 1.
F are valve-chambers made in two parts. They are connected to the branches D and are adapted to allow spherical balls F to operate therein, and their lower sections are so shaped as to produce valve-seats F for the ball-valves.
II are open-ended cylinders connected with the lower ends of the valve-chambers F. Their lower ends are slotted, as required, to allow piston-rods to be connected with pistons therein.
J are open-ended pump-pistons on the inside of the cylinders H. They are cylindrical in shape, and attached to their tops in a common way are cheek-valves J K are stirrup-shaped piston-rods attachedto the lower ends of the piston J. They operate on the outside of the cylinders II and valve-chamber F and traverse the slots in th ends of the cylinders H.
L are connecting-rods attached to the pumphandle G on opposite sides of its fulcrum and to the piston-rods K to impart reciprocating motions to the pistons J and thereby alternately open the check-valves J attached thereto, when the handle O is operated, as required, to force'a continuous stream of water up through the valve-chambers F and the well-tube D and its spout D It is believed from the foregoing detailed description of the construction and function of the various parts which comprise my invention that the construction and operation of the whole device will be readily understood by any one skilled in the art to which it pertains.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved double-action force-pump comprising a base, a supporting-post, and a handle fulcrumed therein, substantially as described, a-well-tube attached to the supporting-post and curved at the top, as represented, to form a spout, a branch having two arms extending in opposite directions and having a screw-threaded connection with the said tube, two ball-valve chambers formed complete in themselves and having screw-threadand having approximately stirru p-shaped devices on their lower ends which are extended through the vertical slots in the said cylinders and attached to the valve-bearing pistons, substantially as shown and described.
