UNITED STATES PATENT OinrIcE6 THOMAS HILL, OF JERSEY CITY, NEY JERSEY.
DUMPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,869, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed January 10, 1891. Serial No. 377,315. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that 1,' THOMAS HILL, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have inventedanew and useful Improvement in DumpingWVagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
This invention relates to dumping-wagons, in which the body of the wagon has a rolling and generally a tilting action to discharge its load; and it consists in a dumping-wagon of this description of novel construction, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a dumpingwagon, in part, embodying my invention and showing the body of the wagon in the position it occupies when not being tilted; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the body of the wagon in its tilted position. A indicates one of the side pieces or frame of the wagon in part, and B C its front and rear wheels-represented by dotted lines.
D is the rolling and tilting body of the wagon.
Upon the frame A or each opposite side piece of the frame outside of the body D is mounted and secured a body-supporting rail E running lengthwise of the frame from or near the rear end of thelatter to any required distance in front. This rail is here shown that is, in Figs. l and 2-as raised near its middle and inclining in reverse directions front and back, with one or more concave recesses b b in the upper surface of its raised middle portion and with its advance and front ends bent or turned upward, as at c c, and, if desired, the front end extended to form a guard d throughout the length of the forward inclined portion of the rail, as shown by dotted lines.
Upon the exterior sides of the body D of the wagon-that is, upon each side thereofare secured straps e e, arranged at a suitable distance apart, and carrying at their lower ends rollers ff, which rest upon the rail E, and serve to support the body of the wagon, as well as to provide for the tilting of it.
Then the body D of the wagon is in its carrying or non-tilting position, as shown in Fig. l, the forward roller f rests against the front upturned end of the rail-that is, at foot of the forward-inclined portion of the rail or front end of the guard d, which thus acts as a stop to limit the forward motion of the body, as well as to keep it down in its place--while the other or rear roller f, which occupies a higher position on the body than the front one, rests in 'its receiving concave recess b to further steady the body and prevent it from being accidentally run back.
To tilt the body of the wagon, as shown in Fig. 2, the body is shoved or run back, the rear roller f being raised out of the concave b in which it sat and running down the rear inclined portion of the rail till arrested by the backward upturned end of the rail or stop, while the front roller ftravels'up the front inclined portion of the rail till seated in the concave recess b made to receive it or till arrested by the rear end of the guard d, thereby causing the wagon-body to be tilted, as shown, facilitating the tilting of it, and holding it in its tilted position till righted again by running the body forward, the rear roller fthen traveling up the rear inclined portion of the rail, seating itself in the recess ZJ made to receive it, and the front roller f being raised out of its receiving-recess and traveling down the front inclined portion of the rail till arrested by the forward stop or guard and the body settling downinto an approximately horizontal position, as shown in fig. I.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In dumping-wagons, the combination, with the wagon-frame and the wagon-body adapted to move backward and forward over said frame and to tilt or dump from its rear end and provided on the exterior of its sides with supporting-rollers, of raised rails mounted on the wagon-frame, having reverse inclinations on their front and back, adapted to receive said rollers upon them, and provided with recesses intermediately of their length, adapt edto form rest-s for and to receive said roll ers within them, substantially as described.
2. In a dumping-wagon of the character ICO Io body, of a guard on either side of said frame and connected therewith over the front rollers, adapted to hold thebody down to its place and acting as a stop While dumping the Wagon-body, essentially as shown and described.
THOMAS 'HLL .Titnesses'.
