JAY BYRON RHODES, OF HARVEY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO F. C. AUSTIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF HARVEY, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DUNIPING-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming partei' Letters Patent No. 714,239, dated November 25, 1902.
Application led April 22, 1902.
t a four-wheeled wagon can be readily and easily tilted for dumping purposes, to effectively balance and support the tilting body, and to permit the body to be readily tilted into position'to quickly and effectively discharge the load.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in side elevation a dumping-Wagon embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the body of the wagon tilted into position for dumping the load. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of the wagon. Fig. l1 is a detail showing a section on line 4: et in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail showing a section on line 5 5 in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a transverse section on line 6 6 in Fig. 1, the rear portion of the frame being broken away.
The frame of the wagon is supported by front wheels A and rear wheels B and forms or is provided with a bed which curves rearwardly and downwardly from a point between the front and rear wheels. For the sake of lightness this frame or body supporting bed is preferably constructed with a pair of oppositely-arranged side barsC, having straight and slightly-inclined forward portions c and curved rear portions c.
The tilting body D has its under side or bottom portion, which bears upon said supportingbed, curved upwardly and rearwardly from a point between its ends, the forward portion d being straight and the rear portion d being formed on a curve which corresponds Withbut which is the reverse of the curve given to the rear portions of the bed-bars c'."
When the tilting body is in its normal carrying position, the curved bottom portion d of the body will diverge upwardly from the curved rear `portion c of the bed, as illustrated in Fig.;-1f. When, however, the body Serial lIo.\104,140. (No model.)
` is tilted for the purpose of dumping the load,
its curved portions will rock upon the curved portions of the bed, as indicated iu Fig. 2, which ,p shows the body rocked into position for dumping. I
The tilting body is tied or hinged to the bed by a construction or arrangement of strap-hinge device, comprising iiexible straps consisting ot' metal bands, chains, .or cables connecting the body with the bed-bars. In
the construction shown straps E, consisting Y of flexible cables, have their rear ends attached to the rear end portion of the body, as at cl2, Fig. 1, and their forward ends attached to the side bars C at points between the ends of the latter, as at c2, Fig. 2, it being observed that the attaching-points c2 for the forward ends of the straps E are intermediate ofthe curved portions c c' of the bed-bars or near such points.
Fig. 5 illustrates one way in which the forward ends of the straps E can be secured. In said figure the forward end portion of a strap E is attached to a socket F, which is in turn secured to one of the bed-bars C. To
Vattached to the rear end portions of the bedbars C, as at g. Fig. 4 shows one of said cables attached to a socket H, which is in turn secured to one of the bed-bars. This or any other suitable way may be employed for attaching the ends of the straps.
The frame or bed, having a downwardlycurved rear portion and preferably composed of side bars C, is also desirably provided with grooves or channels for the flexible straps, and two pairs of such straps are desirably employed. To such end each bar C is provided with a channel c3, Figs. tand 5, and a pair of straps E G are arranged to operate in each of such channels. With such arrangement the bottom d, Fig. 5, of the tilting body can rock on the portions of the bars C at opposite sides of these channels.
The hinge-straps are always taut, and while permitting the body to tilt and rock upon the curved bed-support they will at all times effectively bind the tilting body to the bed and prevent lateral displacement.
In order to check the body when tilted into proper position for dumping, as in Fig. 1, a cord or cable I is arranged to connect the forward end of the body with the forward end portion of the frame or bed.
The body can be tilted by hand, or any suitable mechanism adapted for tilting the body and under control of the driver can be provided.
The grooves or channels arranged to receive the straps, so as to permit the curved bearing portion of the body to bear and tilt upon the curved bearing and supporting portion of the frame, are preferably formed in the supporting-frame, as in the side bars thereof; but, if preferred, such grooves can be formed in the body or in both the body and the frame.
What I claim as my invention isl. A'dumping-wagon comprising a bodysupporting frame having a downwardly and rearwardly curved rear end portion;` a tilting body having an upwardly and rearwardly curved rear end bottom portion arranged to rock upon the curved portion of the supporting-frame when the body is tilted; and hinge connection between the body and the frame consisting of flexible straps such as set forth in part attached to the rear end portion of the body, and in part attached to the rear end portion of the frame; the straps attached to the rear end portion of the body being eX- tended forward and attached to the frame, and the straps attached to the rear end portion of the frame being extended forward and attached to the body.
2. In a dumping-wagon, a body-supporting frame supported by front and rear wheels and constructed with side bars having downwardly and rearwardly curved rear end portions; a tilting body supported upon said side bars and having an upwardly and rearwardly curved rear end bottom portion arranged to rock upon the curved parts of the side bars when the body is tilted, one of said members being provided with grooves or channels along its curved bearing portion; and hinge connection `between the body and the frame consisting of flexible straps such as set forth in part attached to the rear end portion of the body, and in part attached to the rear end portions of the grooved side bars of the frame; the straps attached to the rear end portion of the body being extended forward and attached to the grooved side bars and the straps attached to the rear end portion of the side bars being extended forward and attached to the body, said straps being also arranged to operate within the said grooves or channels.
