F. M. MITCHELL.
THILL GOUPLING.
No. 460,830. Patented 0015.6, 1891.
JNE/V102;
WIIIIHIIIIIII EEE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERIC M. MITCHELL, OE PERU, OHIO.
TH l LL-COU PLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,830, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed May I6, 1891. Serial No. 392.991. (No model.)
the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part et this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in anti-rattling devices for thill-couplings.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, economical, and etcient device or attachment for thill-couplings whereby rattling of the same is prevented.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a thill-coupling, showing my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates an axle of any ordinary or suitable construction, and 2 a clip having downwardly-projecting lugs 8, with screw-threaded ends and with forwardly-projecting lugs it, to which. the thill-iron 5 is pivotally secured by means of bolt 6.
The numeral 7 designates a plate provided with apertures 8 8, through which the lugs 3 pass, said plate abutting against the under side et the axle and being retained in place by means of the nuts 9. Intermediate of the apertures S the plate 7 is provided with a rectangular slot or aperture 10, and intersecting ,therewith on its upper side is a circular recess 12.
The numeral 13 denotes a lever formed or provided at its front end with aclampingplate 14, having two horizontal walls 15, between which is inserted a rubber block 1G, having its upper face, which is adapted to bear against the loop 1701:' the thill-iron,pro
vided with a curved or semicircularrecess to correspond with the circular form of said loop. The block 16 is forced between the horizontal arms of the clamping-plate, and is held in place by reason of its elasticity. The rear end of the lever is formed with a head or extension 1S, against which abuts the end of a thumb-screw 19, which passes through an aperture in the rear part. of plate 7. Intermediate of the ends ot` this lever is an upwardly-projecting arm 20, provided with latl eral lugs 21, which pass through the slot in the plate 7 and engage with the circular recess therein, forming the fulcrum for the lever.
The thill-irons are secured to the shafts 22 by means of bolts and nuts, as usual.
The operation will be readily understood. The rubber block will bear against the loop of the thill-iron, the latter resting in the semicircular recess therein. By actuating the thumb-screw 1-9 the lever 13 is moved upon its fulcrum and the block caused to press with more or less force upon the loop of the thill-iron, thus preventing rattling.
To detach the lever it is only necessary to loosen the screw 19, remove the rubber block, and turn the lever at a right angle, when the lugs 21 will be in line with and can readily pass through the slot in plate 7 Having thus described my invention, what I claim isy The combination, with an axle, a clip, a thilliron pivoted thereto, and a plate secured to the clip, having a rectangular recess and a curved intersecting recess, of the lever carrying at one end an elastic block having a semicireular recess in which the loop of the thill-iron rests, acentral upwardly-projecting arm provided with lateral lugs fitting in said recess, and a thumb-screw passing through said plate and bearing against the opposite end of said lever, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERIC M.
