UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. WALKER AND ivORY'w. HARLOW, OF PLYMOUTH, MASSACHU- SETTS, AssIGNORs TO THE PLYMOUTH FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF sAME PLACE.
GRATE FOR STOVES OR FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,710, dated October 6, 1891. Application filed April 9, 1891. Serial No. 388,223. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that we, GEORGE L. WALKER and IVORY W. HARLOW, citizens of the United States, both residing at Plymouth, in the 5 county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grates for Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming. a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to a grate for stoves or ranges, comprising a flat plate having an oval orother shaped opening and adapted to be supported by its edges in any desirable way in the stove and to support the fire-brick or lining of the stove, which plate has downwardly-extending lugs, one at its rear supporting a pivot and one at each of the front corners, forminga rest. The pivot and rests carry and support a movable open-work plate, which forms the principal part of the grate bottom, and which is adapted to be oscillated upon the pivot, the grate-bottom being suspended from the first-named plate. In the bottom plate there is a large central hole, which is closed by a slide-plate having a long slotted arm, by means of which the slide is moved from the hole and the grate-bottom os- 30 cillated. The entire construction comprises only three parts-the slide-plate and arm, the grate-bottom, and the plate from which the grate-bottom is suspended. I I
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in plan of the flat plate above referred to, a prt i0n of the plate being broken out. Fig. 2 1s a view in end elevation thereof, taken through the rear. Fig. 3 is a View in plan of the parts represented inFig. 1 reversed. F1g.4 1s a V ew in plan of the grate-bottom. Fig. 5 1s a view in front elevation thereof. Fig. 6 is a view in plan of the grate-bottom reversed. Fig. 7 is a view in plan, reduced in size, of the slldeplate. Fig. 8 is a view in plan of the assembled grate. Fig. 9 is also a new in plan of the assembled grate, the grate-bottom and slide occupying a-differentposition from that represented in Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings, is the plate, from which the grate-bottom B 18 suspended.
Q The plate A is supported in the stove or range in any desired manner, and it has the large oval or other shaped opening a and the narrow upward ly-extending rim a ab'outit. The surface a of the plate outside the rim serves as a rest for the fire-brick orlining to the combustion-chamber. From the under side of the plate A there project downward three principal lugs or supports: first, the rear lug a this has the flat inwardly-extending surface a", from which rises apivot 04 second, the front corner-lugs a at Each of these proj ects downward from a front corner of the plate A and has a flat resting-surface a The plate A also has extending down about the opening a the short fingers a (See Fig. 2.)
The grate-bottom B has an exterior ring I), in the edge of which is arranged recesses 79' and the interior ring b which is lower than the exterior ring and connected with it by bars 5 which form open spaces b*. The bottom B also has at its rear the angular pocket 5 of a size to receive the horizontal portion of the lug a and a pivot-hole 1), into whichv the pivot a extends. It also has at each forward corner the rails orsupports 12 which extend laterally from the ring I) to rest upon the upper surfaces of the horizontal portions a of the lugs a a", the rails being of a sufficient length to permit of the travel or oscillating movement of the grate-bottom upon said surfaces. The grate-bottom also has at one end the downwardly-extending pin 11 The end b of the central ring b of the grate-bottom is cut away 'to allow a slide-plate to be moved over the holding-lugs 12 This slide-plate 0, when in position upon the lugs, closes the hole o in the grate-bottom. The plate 0 is shaped as represented in Fig. 7. It has the spaces 0 and the long arm 0, in which is a long recess or slot 0 This arm extends toa door or opening in the stove and provides means whereby the slide-plate may be moved to open the hole o in the grate-bottom. It also serves as a means of oscillating the grate, as the pin 17 of the grate-bottom passes into and through the long slot or recess 0 so that by oscillating or moving the handle back and forth the grate-bottom and slide are caused to be oscillated or shaken.
By hanging the grate-bottom as specified it will be easily oscillated. By providing it with the large hole in the bottom means are afforded for the removal of dead ashes, clinkers, (to.
We do not wish to be understood as broadly covering these features, however, our invention comprising rather the broad and specific means of embodying these features in a cheap and strong construction.
Having thus fullydescribed our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The improved grate comprising the plate A, having the central opening a and the downwardly-extending pivot-lug a and the down wardly-extendingrest-lugs a a cast with the plate A, and the grate-bottom B, having a pivot-hole to receive the pivot a and the supports 11 to rest upon the surface a of the lugs a a as and for the purposes described. 2. The combination, in a grate, of the plate A, having the central opening a, the downwardly-extendin g pivot-lug a, and the lugs a. a and a grate-bottom B, supported by said pivot and lugs and having the opening I) and pin 1), with the slide 0, having the arm a, provided with the slot 0 into which the pin 0 extends, as and for the purposes described. GEORGE L. WALKER. IVORY V. HARLOW. In presence 0f-- B. A. I-IATHAWAY, ELMER F. SHAW.
