H. A. MUGKLE.
- CARRIAGE BODY.
No. 460,682. Patented Oct. 6, 1891.
; gM'UQ/WtOC Jfzaclla,
61m I na UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. MUCKLE, OF ST. PAUL PARK, MINNESOTA.
CARRIAGE-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,682, dated October 6, 18 91.
Application filed June 20, 1891. Serial No. 396,905. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY A. MUCKLE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Paul Pa rk, in the county of \Vashington, State of Minnesota; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Bodies, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in angular corners for wagon and sleigh bodies, articles of furniture, picture-frames, and other articles where a strong corner is desirable and one that will not open or crack. In the present instance I have chosen to show it in connection with a vehicle-body, as that will probably be the use to which it will be most extensively put; but it will of course be understood that I do not intend to restrict myself to the employment of the invention in this connection.
The invention has for its object, primarily, to provide an improved corner for devices, such as above mentioned, which will not open or crack, and in which the corner-piece will yield with the panel or other part to which it is attached. I make the corner-piece with the right-angled portions thereof beveled and running to a feather-edge, the adjacent portions of the parts to which the corner-piece is to be attached being correspondingly formed-that is, inversely-so that a long lap is provided, and the panel being thick and the sides of the corner-piece thin the feather-edges will allow the said corner-piece to spring with the panels or to go and come therewith, and thus prevent opening of the joint at the corner.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of the corner of a vehicle-body with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the angular corner-piece detached. Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section through the body with the corner-piece in position.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views in which they occur.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the sill-piece, and B the side and end pieces of the body of a vehicle. The vertical adjacent edges of the sideand end pieces at the corner are beveled, as shown at a, the two bevels meeting at the corner, as shown at b. The corner-post C may be affixed or secured to the inner faces of the end and side pieces in any suitable manner.
D represents the corner-piece, which has its right-angled portions tapered from the angle in opposite directions, the thinner portions running to a feather-edge, as seen in all of the views.
The relative thicknesses of the beveled portions of the corner-piece and side and end pieces should be such that when the cornerpiece is applied in position, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the outer faces of the corner-piece will be flush with the outer faces of the end and side pieces, so as to present a neat and smooth finish.
The corner-piece may be secured in position in any suitable manner, preferably by glue or analogous substance, although I may sometimes employ pins g, as shown in Fig. 3. The pins maybe employed in addition to the glue, if desired.
Importance is attached to the long bevel and feather edge of the corner-piece, whereby the corner-piece will give with the end and side pieces and thereby avoid opening at the corner.
What I claim as new is 1. The combination, with adjoining pieces having their outer faces beveled to a featheredge approaching the angle thereof, of an angular corner-piece having its inner faces correspondingly beveled to a feather-edge, and a corner-post covering the joint between the adjoining pieces, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the end and side outer surfaces of said pieces and the cornerpieces having their outer faces beveled to a piece flush, as set forth. IO feather-edge extending to the angle of junct- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in ore of the said pieces upon straight unbroken presence of two witnesses.
