MBGHANVISM FOR AGTUATING THE DABBING BRUSHES 0F COMBING UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES PARKIN, OF LYNN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN L. PATCHETT,
OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS. j
MECHANISM FOR ACTUATING THE DABBING-BRUSHES F COMBiNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 460,654, dated October 6, 1891. Application filed August 29, 1890. Serial No. 363,398.. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, JAMES PAEKIN, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Actuating the Dabbing-Brushesof Oombing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will lo enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked-thereon, which form a part of I5 this specitication.
Figure l is alongitudinal, median, and vertical section of mechanism of my invention for operating the dabbing-brushes of combing-machines. Fig. 2 is a front View of the 2O same with the cover to the chamber of the bracket removed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of said mechanism, taken in line of the axis of the shaft K. Fig. 4 is an end view of the pulley L.
The nature of my invention is defined in the claims hereinafter presented.
In the drawings, A denotes one of the pillars of a combing-machine, to which I secure a bracket B, chambered at C, said chamber being closed at its front by a cover oc, secured to the bracket by bolts y. Within the said chamber is a slide-frame D, supported between ways a o, adjustably applied to the bracket. Screws b b, screwed into the bracket,
are arranged with their heads against the outer edges of said ways, so that by turning said screws they will move the ways and take up the Wear between said ways and the adjacent edges of the said slide-frame. A sliderod E, attached to the frame D, extends through the bottom of the chamber, and a stuffing-box F projects from the bracket and has fixed to its lower end a brush G. To the upper part of the frame D in a slot 25 a pin c is adjustably secured by means of a nut 26 and washer 27, said pin havinga head 28 and being embraced by the upper end of a connect-ing-rod H, said rod being made in halves, as shown, secured together by a bolt d. The
5o lower end of said rod embraces the crank-pin e of a wheel I, keyed to a horizontal shaft K, supported in the bracket. The said connecting-rod is made in halves for convenience in applying it to or removing it from said pins c and e. The portion of the pin c which is embraced by the rod II is round, while that portion which fits within the slot 25 is square in cross-section to prevent it from turning therein, and between the square and round portions of the pin c is a collar 29, made in- 6o tegral with the said pin, which is seated in the rabbeted edges 30 of the slot 25 and projects slightly beyond the surface of the frame D to prevent the contact of the rod H therewith. Fixed to the said shaft K is a pulley L, which is made in half-sections on to facilitate its application to or removal from the shaft, said sections being fastened together and clamped to the shaft by bolts w w, applied to ears u u, projecting from each half 7o of the pulley. (See Fig. 4..) A stuffing-box M projects from the bracket and extends within the pulley, as represented, the gland thereof havingin its edge a series of holes f to facilitate the turning of it, when desired, by a rod introduced Within the opening in the pulley and into said holes. Nuts g and h are screwed on the outer end of the shaft K to prevent endwise movement of the shaft in its bearings. A conduit o' leads from the outer bear- 8o ing j of the said shaft and through the top of the bracket, and is there provided with an oilcup N, as represented.
On motion being imparted to the pulley L by a band from a pulley onv the driving-shaft of the combing-machine (said machine and driving-pulley and band not being shown in the drawings) the sliding frame D and rod E will be rapidly reciprocated and the brush G caused to thoroughly dab the material into 9o the teeth of the comb, and the oil in the chamber G being agitated to such an extent by the frame D dashing into it as to fill the said chamber with spray, which keeps the working parts therein well lubricated.
Vhat I claim isf` l. The chambered bracket provided with the stuing-boxes F and M, in combination with the sliding frame and rod supported in said bracket, the shaft and pulley, the crankroo Wheel lixed to said shaft, and the connectionrod connecting said frame and crank-Wheel, as and for the purpose explained.
2. The combination of the chambered bracket provided with stuiTing-boXes F and M, the sliding frame and rod supported in said bracket, the brush fixed to said rod, the shaft and crank-Wheel, the connection-rod joining said Wheel and frame, and the pulley L, made in sections fixed to the shaft K, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a dabbing mechanism for combingmachines, the connection-rod H, made in seotions secured to each other, in combination
