MACHINE FOR METALLIZING ELECTROTYPE-MOLDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,164, dated August 2, 1881.
Application filed May 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HANSON, of Philadelphia, in the county'of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Metallizing Electrotype-Molds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref- 'erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a partial side elevation of the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 3.
The same letter indicates the same part wherever it occurs in the drawings.
My invention relates to a machine intended for the purpose of covering with pulverized plumbago the wax molds usually employed by electrotypers to receive the deposit in the bath, and known in the art as a metallizer.
It consists in the union in one machine of'a revolving perforated table for the reception of the molds, rapidly-vibrating brushes for the application of the plumbago-dust to their surfaces, a waste-box for the collection of the surplus plumbago, an air-tight case, with suitable doors or covers,in which the o'peration is conducted, and mechanism for giving motion to the table and brushes, all as hereinafter more specifically set forth.
In a cylindrical case, K, having a conical bottom and supported on aframe, X, is placed on an upright shaft a perforated table, A, having teeth on its periphery which gear with a worm-screw, G, on shaft J. This shaft has fast and loose pulleys I I on one end and fly-wheel G 011 the opposite end, as shown in Fig. 1. The pulley I receives motion by means of a belt from any suitable prime mover.

one end of a pitman, H, the other end of which is attached by pin 6 to a slotted lever, t, projecting from the end of rock-shaft D, to which the vibrating brushes B are fixed. By the rocking of shaft D a rapid vibratory motion is imparted to the brushes. The pin 0 can be adjusted in the slot of the lever I? so as to regulate the extent of vibration of the brushes.
The case K is provided with a tight cover, M, screwed down, and with a swinging door, N, held tightly to the case by the swinging lever 10, which bears against the inclined face 9 attached to the top of the door. (See Fig. 3.)
The shaft J and worm-wheel C are covered by a long cap, L, bolted to the case.
At the bottom of the conical portion of the case K is attached the waste-pan O, which receives a lip, to which it is held by the swinging yoke R and the set-screw s. The cap L, cover M, door N, and waste pan 0 are all packed air-tight to prevent the escape of dust during the operation of the machine.
The operation is obvious from the construction. The molds are fixed with their faces up on the table A. The brushes, by their vibration and the rotation of the table, apply the plumbago to the surfaces of the molds on every part, giving them a complete covering of metal preparatory to their transfer to the bath. The unused portion ofthe powder is collected and saved in the pan 0.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a metallizing-machine, the combination of an air-tight case, rotating perforated table, vibrating brushes, and mechanism for operating the table and brushes, all substantially as set forth.
