Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. Cr. SHAVER, OF NEV HAVE, CONNECTICUT.
ERASER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,032, dated Janlar)l 24, 1865 To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, A. G. SHAVER, of the city of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State Of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Erasers, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, :reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures l, 2, and 3 represent different methods of making them, with sections of each on the line .fr a.
My invention consists in forming au eraser' with a tile-cut surface and also with a sharp or scraping' edge, so that either may be used, as may be most desirable.
That others may understand the construction and operation ot' my invention, I will particularly describe it.
Fig. l represents an eraser constructed in form similar to those now in common use. One side is Inade slightly convex, as shown in the section ot' Fig. 1, and that side is cut or roughened like a le, with the exception of the strip along the edge, which is ground smooth or chamfered Off, so that the edge may loe made sha-rp and cutting in the usual wav.
lt is obvious that the eraser-blade may be made with one or more sharp edges, that being simply a natter of degree.
Figs. 2 and 3 represent modifications of the same idea preferred by some.
It is found that a surface cut like a file operates in erasing a blot of ink from the surface of paper or parchment more uniformly and satisfactorily than a cutting-edge, While it is also true that a sharp edge will leave the surface much smoother and liner than the le will leave it; hence an eraser composed of a file and a sharp edge also must be very perfect inits operation.
It is Obvious that forms into which this instrument may be wrought are many, and I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to those shown or to any particular style or form.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An eraser constructed with a tile-cut surface, in combination with a sharp cutting Or scraping edge or edges, substantially as shown.
2. An eraser constructed with a iile-cut surface in ycombination with a sharp cutting or,
