Description

(No Mode-1.)
F. H. KIEKENAPP.
Patented Sept. 29, 1891 Y UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
FREDERICK Il. KIEKENAIP, OF FARIBAULT, MINNESOTA.
COLLAR-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,234, dated September 29, 1891. Application iiled May 25, 1891. Serial No. 393,925. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK II. KIEKE- NAPP, of Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Collar-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for securely, conveniently, and quickly fastening the ends of a horse-collar; and its object is to provide a device of simple, cheap, and neat construction and which maybe readily fastened upon the collar.
To this end my invention consists in a hingelike fastening, one portion of which is se cured upon each side or end of the collar, but the parts, instead of being pivoted together, are secured by a strip-joint connection.
Further, my invention consists in various details of construction and in combinations, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in whichm Figure l is a general View of a device ombodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the parts, the same being separated. Fig. 3 is a side view of the saine. Fig. 4 is a view of the under side of the device. Figs. 5 and 6 are details.
As shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the parts of my fastener are adapted to b e secured on the ends 2 and 3 of the horse-collar and have a curved and V shape adapted to iit the groove formed by the rim and the shoulder of the collar. These parts 4 and 5 are fastened to the collar by bolts 6 (shown in Fig. 3) and secured by heads or nuts 7, held from turning by the walls of the countersunk opening provided in the outer surfaces of the device and adapt-ed to receive the same. Said openings or recesses are deep enough so that the nuts are made flush with said surfaces, thereby preventing wear of the hainestrap. The inner ends of the parts 4 and 5 are quite broad and are attened, and are provided with outwardly-extending lugs 9 and 10. Lugs 9 are straight and thin, while the lugs l0 are grooved out on the inside and adapted to receive the lugs 9, as indicated in Fig. l. This constitutes the slipjoint or connection. The lugs l0 and 9 are held in engagement and against a lateral movement by the bottom lug or projection ll,
provided on the part 5 and engaging the un- 55 der or inner side ofthe strap 4. This lug may project out slightly from the surface or by partly grooving out the inner surface and end of the part 4 to form the groove l2, and the stop-shoulder 13, adapted to receive the lng, 6o
may be made flush with the surface, so as to more nicely iit upon the collar. The shoulder 13 prevents the part 4 from slipping side- Wise. W'hen the shoulder 13 is not used, I
close the end, as shown in Fig. G, to prevent the sliding out of the lugs 9. The ends of the lugs are beveled and rounded, as shown in Figs. 5 and G, to make the connection of the same more easy.
Between the lugs 9 9 and lO lO, respectively, 7o
I provide the wide notches shown, wherein the haine-strap is adapted to lie snugly when the hames are fastened in position, thereby locking the lugs 9 in place in the slotted lugs 10. I also provide means for fastening the martingale-strap upon the part 5 of the collarfastener, which means consist in the cut loop formed by the hooks 14 and l5, erected on the straps 5, facing one another, their ends being oppositely beveled and standing a short dis- 8o tance apart. The strap does not need to be Vunbnckled in order to be inserted into this loop, but is passed down through to the inclined slot 15 between the hooks, and then bent or twisted into a fiat position in the loop or eye.
Havingthus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, inadevice of the class 9o described, of parts4and 5, having straight and slotted lugs 9 and l0, respectively, wide notches provided between the parts of' said lugs and adapted to receive the haine-strap,
a projection ll on the part 5, adapted to engage the back of the part 4, and a stop whereby the lugs 9 are prevented from slipping out of engagement with the lugs 10 after being secured in place, substantially as described.
2. A collarfastener consisting in the parts roo ing the loop 01 eyeprovided with theinelined one of said parts and having the' inclined xo slot l5, through which to insert the martinslots 15, through which to insert the martingale, substantially as described. gale, as described.
3. The combination, in a device of the class In testimony whereof I l1zwe,this 19th day described, With the parts 4 and 5, having of May, 1891, set my hand.
straight and slotted lugs 9 and l0 arranged FREDERICK H. KIEKENAPP. with notches between them, of a projection 11 In presence ofon the part 5, Iadapted to engage :L projection FRED. S. LYON,
on the part 4, and a loop or eye provided on O. G. HAWLEY.
