GEORGE H. ALLEN, OF CLINTON, NEW YORK.
PRESS FOR PRINTING ON ROLLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,172, dated September 29, 1891. Application filed October 3l, 1890. Serial No. 369,966. (No model) To a/ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE I-I. ALLEN, of Clinton, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Printing on Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and tothe figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a press for printing on round sticks or rollers.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, and in which similar iigures of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l shows a side View of the machine. Fig. 2 shows the same as Fig. l at the beginning of the operation of printinga stick. Fig. 3 shows a front view of the machine and as seen from the left of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a top view of the machine. Referring more speciiically to the reference-numerals marked on the drawings, l indicates the table of the machine, which is mounted upon suitable legs. On the table is provided an inking-pad 2, which is provided with any suitable surface for an inking-pad. In line with the inking-pad 2 is a face of type mounted upon a removable block 3, which block 3 is provided with suitable tenons engaging in suitable mortises in the table, so that the type-block can be readily removed and a new face of type substituted.4 Extending across the table and over the face of type and the inking-pad 2 isalever-arm 4L, which at its rear end is secured to an upward eXtension of the frame by elastic connections 5 5, and has a connection G also secured to the rear end of the lever and extending down and connecting with the treadle 7; At the front the lever et is provided with a suitable handle for operating, and adjacent to the handle it is provided with downwardly-projecting parallel flanges S 8, Fig. 3. Farther from the handle and near the rear end of the flanges 8 is provided an inking-roller 9, journaled in suitable bearings secured to the lever 4t. l0
and ll are inking-pads for spreading the ink previous to applying it to pad 2. 12 indi- The roller 9 is then retracted and caused to move over the surface of the type-block 3, inking the type. The stick is then placed at the front edge of the type-block and pressure being applied both by foot on lever 7 and by the handle on lever 4E the lever is moved in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, rolling the stick over the face of the type, and thus printing the same, and at the same time the roller 9 is made to engage the inking-pad 2, thus inking the roller preparatory to inking the type for the next operation. Vhen the stick 12 has been rolled across the face yof the type, the pressure is then relieved from lever 7 and the stick may be removed. During the operation of printing the flanges S only engage the stick from the upper side and preferably outside of the part printed,'thus preventing' all blurring or rubbing of the fresh ink upon the stick.
The type used in this device are preferably elastic-faced type, although other type may be used.
The stick shown at 12 is what is known as a knife-Sharpener, being provided at one end with an emery surface, as shown by the shading thereon; but the device is equally adapted to operate upon window-curtain sticks, handles, or any other round device.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a press for printing on cylindrical bodies, a stationary face of type, a lever crossing the face of type and secured to the frame to permit vertical and lateral movement thereof, and flanges on thelever for engaging the body to be printed, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device for printing, the combination of a face of type, an iuking-pad adjacent thereto, a lever-arm crossing the face of type and inking-'pad and provided lwith downwardly-projecting flanges adapted to engage the circular body to be printed on and hav- TOO ing an hiking-roller adapted to engage the pad and inking the face of the Jtype, and a flexible and elastic connection between the rear end of the lever-arm and the frame of the press, substantially as set forth.
3. In a printing-press, the combination of a table, a face of type, an nking-pad, a le- Ver crossing the table and flexibly connected at its inner end to the frame of the press, an
inking-roller mounted on the lever, :L treadle 1o under the table, and the connection between the lever and tread le, substantially as setforth.
In Witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
