Description

(No Model.)
J. MASON.
TICKET HOLDER. No. 460,144. Patented Sept. 29, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
JOI-IN MASON, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
TICKET-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,144, dated September 29, 1891.
Application lecl May 13, 1891.
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MASON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .licket-IIolders, of which the following is a specification. The invention relates to improvements in ticket-holders; and it consists in a novel box or receptacle, hereinafter described, to be carried in the pocket and adapted to hold a number of elevated-railroad; ferry, or analogous tickets in a manner rendering it convenient to detach them for use when desired.
The holder constituting the invention is particularly adapted for holding such tickets as are sold in long strips and folded back and forth one upon the other to form a rectangnlar package, the object being to afford an adequate means for conveniently holding the package and leaving the upper or end ticket conveniently exposed for detachment.
The invention will be more fully understood from the detailed description hereinafterpresented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view, partly in section, of a holder constructed in accordance with the invention, the exposed ticket, which is the full-length of the box, being shown as turned outward at an angle, and hence has the appearance of being shortened. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of same on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a like section of same, the tickets and slides being omitted. Fig. +L is a central transverse section of same on the dot-ted line et at of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of one of the slides, hereinafter referred to, which preserve the package of tickets in compact form within the holder, while permitting the detachment of the upper end ticket.
In the drawings, A represents a box or receptacle adapted to receive the package B of folded tickets and consisting of the bottom O and sides D D, the latter being provided with the longitudinal grooves E. Vithin the grooves E are arranged the slides F F, one being above the other and entering the sides Serial No. 392,567. (No model.)
ing handles or edges G for convenience in withdrawing them.
In the use of the holder the folded strip of tickets will be placed in the box A, as indicated in Fig. 2, after which the slides F F will be placed in position, the slide F being inserted from one end of the box, between the second and third tickets at the top of the package, and the slide F from the Opposite end of the box, between the first and second of said tickets, thus leaving the top ticket free and in position to be detached. After the top ticket has been removed the slide F will be withdrawn and inserted in the lirst fold. of the package beneath the slide F, thus leaving another exposed ticket, and upon the removal of this ticket the slide F will be Withdrawn and inserted in the iirst fold of the package beneath the slide F', whereby another ticket will be left exposed. As the tickets are detached from the top of the .package B the slides F F are thus alternately worked downward in the folds of the package until all of the tickets have been removed. The grooves E receive and direct the side edges of the slides F F and bind said edges sufficiently to prevent the slides from working loose. In the removal of the tickets the inner end of the upper slide furnishes an edge against which the tickets may be conveniently torn or detached. The slides effectually hold the folded strip of tickets in the box, and hence it is not necessary that the latter have closed ends.
In the drawings I have illustrated a strip or package containing ten tickets, with a box having nine grooves E for the slides; but I do not of course limit the invention to the carrying of any particular number of tickets at one time, and hence the number of grooves E may be varied at will.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The ticket-holder consisting of the box "provided with the series of grooves, combined with the slides F F', substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The ticket-holder consisting of the box having an open top and ends and provided in its facing sides With grooves, combined with the alternating slides entering said grooves,
5 substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 8. The ticket-holder consisting of the box -A, having the bottom C and sides D D and adapted to receive the folded strip of tickets forming a package B, combined with the a1- ro ternating slides F F', entering between the folds of said package, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 9th day of May, A. D. 1891.
JOHN MASON.
