Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DWIGHT S. CLARK, OF CAMBRIDGE, ASSIGNOR TO VILLIAM I-I. FORBES, OF BOSTON, IWIASSACHUSETTS.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,068, dated. September 22, 1891.
Application filed April 20, 1891- Serial No. 389,634. (No modelf) To all whom t 77mg concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT S. CLARK, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a box more especially intended for use in transporting ro raisins, although applicable to other uses; and the invention consists of a box made of pasteboard, paper, or of any suitable sheet material constructed and arranged for use, all substantially as hereinafter fully described,
reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figures l and 2 are perspective views of the box, respectively, in its closed and open positions. Fig. 3 shows a cross-section of Fig.
zo l. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section of Fig. l, showing some additional parts. Fig. 5 is a detail View. Figs. 6 and 7 represent the form of the blanks from which the parts of the box are made.
In the drawings, A represents a box having a bottom B, sides C, and ends D. This box is made by having its sides C and ends D turned up at the lines a at right angles or substantially at right angles to the bottom 3o and each corner folded diagonally, as at b, and at right angles, as at d and c, and the diagonally-folded portions E are turned inward and laid against their respective ends D of the box and secured thereto by eyelets 3 5 or rivets F, as shown more particularly in detailV in Fig. 5, which view is enlarged, this mode of forming the corners making rm and rigid corners, greatly strengthening the box.
G is a sheet of pasteboard or paper or other 4o suitable sheet material having a bottom H, which is the same size as the box A and on which the box rests, either loosely or it can be secured thereto by cement or other suitable adhcsive material, as desired. The sheet G extends outward from the bottom portion H in side flap-piecesf g and end flap-pieces hm, and each flap is folded along lines n over 'the lower edge a of the box A and on lines s parallel thereto and over the upper edges t of the 5o box A, as shown.
In use the box A is placed on the bottom portion of the sheet G and left loose thereon or secnredther'eto by paste or cement or in any suitable manner, and then the two side flaps f g are turned up over the sides of the box and over the top, and the two end flaps hm are`turned up and over the ends of the box and over and upon the side flaps, as shown in Fig. 1 more particularly.
Vhen the box is made of thin sheet mate- 6o rial, it is preferable to strengthen the same, and this is done by securing to the bottom, sides, and ends thick pieces J of pasteboard or other suitable material, as shown in section in Fig. 4, and these strengthening-pieces are secured by paste or any suitable adhesive material or in any suitable manner.
The corners of the box can be made and secured together in other ways than as herein particularly described, although it is prefer- 7o able to make them as herein described and shown, as they are very strong and durable.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim isl. In combination, a paper box having a bottom, sides, and ends, its corners secured together, a paper sheet having a central section of the same size of the bottom of the box on which the box rests, and side and end flaps to said paper sheet, each arranged to be folded 8o on lines parallel with its respective side or end of the box and laid or folded against such side or end and over and on top of the box to inclose the same,
2. In combination, a paper box having a bottom, sides, and ends, its corners folded diagonally, eyelets or rivets ,securing the folded corners together, a paper sheet having a central section of the same size of the bot tom of the box on which the box rests, and side 9o and end flaps to said paper sheet, each arranged to be folded on lines parallel with its respective side or end of the box and laid or folded against such side or end and overand on top of the box to inclose the saine.
In combination, a paper box having a bottom, sides, and ends, its corners secured together, a paper sheet having a central section of the size of the bottom of the box on which the box rests and secured thereto in roo any suitable manner, and side and end flaps to said paper sheet, each arranged to be folded on lines parallel with its respective side 01l end of the box and laid or folded against such 5 sideor end over and on top of the box to inclose the same.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two 'subscribing witnesses.
DWlGHT S. CLARK.
