To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN LORENSON, of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in a Combined Umbrella and Fan; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

My invention relates to combined umbrellas and fans, the object being to combine the two articles named in such a way as to permitthem to be very conveniently used and carried together.

With these ends in view my invent-ion consists in the combination, with an umbrellastick, of a spring-actuated holding device mounted therein and including a pivotal arm, one end of which projects from the stick, and a fan attached to the projecting end of the said arm.

My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

As herein shown, the fan A, which is a folding fan of any approved construction, has the butt-ends of its sticks inserted between the two members of a fork B, forming the upper end of a small metallic fan-holder B, the said sticks being secured in place in the said fork by a pin B The central stick A of the fan is preferably made of metal and prolonged at its butt-end beyond its fellows and secured in some convenient manner to the fan-holder in the bottom of the opening between the two arms thereof, so that the said stick is neither movable to the right nor left, whereby the center of the fan is kept in line with the umbrella-stick C, which is preferable, but not necessary. The lower end of the said fanholder is bead-shaped and constructed with a longitudinal slot B and with a lockingshoulder E the said slot receiving the upwardly-curved projecting end of a carryingarm D, the opposite end whereof is hung on a pivot E, mounted in the outer end of a hollow shoulder E, projecting laterally from the hollow metal tube F, attached to the outer end of the umbrella-stick C, corresponding thereto in diameter and forming apart thereof, the said arm D extending transversely or substantially transversely through the said tube and projecting at one end therefrom through an elongated slot C formed therein. The upwardly-turned projecting end of the said arm D is provided with a downwardlyprojecting spring-finger G, having a shoulder G formed upon its outer face to co-operate with the shoulder B, formed in the 'beadshaped lower end of the fan-holder in securing the same to the arm. The said arm is provided upon its lower face and toward its pivoted end with a lug D, to which is pivoted a link H, located within the tube F and extending parallel therewith and having its lower end threaded and entered into a spherical guide 1, adapted in diameter to be moved longitudinally in the tube, but without any excess of lateral play. A stem J, having its inner end threaded and entered into the said guide, extends laterally outward through a slot J, formed in the tube, and supports at its outer end the operating-button K, which is secured to it by a screw K. Aspiral spring L, located within the lower end of the tube, is interposed between the lower face of the said guide and the inner end of a plug M, entering the extreme lower end of the tube and securing the knob M, of which it forms a part thereto. This spring exerts a constant effort to lift the said guide, link, operatingbutton, and carrying-arm into their normal or elevated positions, in which they are shown by full lines in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

It willbe understood that after the umbrella and fan have been opened downward pressure upon the operating-button will cause the fan to be swung away from the umbrellastick and toward the person holding the umbrella very much in the same way that a fan is ordinarily manipulated, the fan being an tomatically returned to its upright position by means of the spiral spring just as soon as pressure upon the button is relieved.

The parts mentioned in the foregoing description constitute a spring-actuated holding device mounted in a portion of the umbrella-stick. Preferably the tube in which they are mounted will be made of metal; but they might be mounted in a wooden stick suitably hollowed out and slotted for the purpose.

In case it is desired to detach the fan, that may be done by simply pressing the retaining-spring G inwardly to disengage its shoulder G from the shoulder B of the holder and lifting the fan and its holder off the curved outer end of the carrying-arm. The fan is readily replaced by pressing the holder down over the said end of the arm,thus causing the said shoulders to be re-engaged.

It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some slight departures from the construction herein shown and described may be made. I would therefore have it understood that I hold myself at liberty to make such slight changes and. alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a combined umbrella and fan, the combination, with the umbrellastick, of a springactuated holding device mounted therein, including a pivotal arm, one end of which projeets laterally out of the stick, and a fan attached to the projecting end of the said arm, substantially as set forth.

2. I11 a combined umbrella and fan, the combination, with an umbrella-stick, of a pivotal carrying-arm projecting near one end out of the same, an operating-button located outside of the stick, means connecting the said button and arm at a point within the stick, a spring located within the stick and arranged to push the arm and button upward, a fanholder adapted to be attached to the said end of the arm, and a fan having the butt-ends of its sticks attached to the fan-holder, substantially as set forth.

In a combined umbrella and fan, the con1= binatiomwith an umbrella-stick made hollow in part and having an offsetting hollow lug, of a carrying-arm having one end pivoted in the said lug and the other projecting out of a slot in the hollow portion of the stick, an operating-button located outside of the stick and connected within the same with the said arm, a spring located in the stick and arranged to hold the arm and button in their elevated positions, a fan-holder adapted to be attached to the projecting end of the said arm, and a fan having the buttends of its sticks attached to the said fan-holder,substantially as set forth.

4. In a combined umbrella and fan, the combination, with a tube forming part of an umbrella-stick, of a carrying-arm pivoted near one end in a hollow projection of the said tube and having its other end projecting out of the same, a spherical guide located within the tube,a link connecting the said arm and guide, a stem having its inner end entered into the said guide and projecting at its outer end through a slot in the tube, an operating-button carried by the outer end of the said stem, a spiral spring located within the tube and pressing against the lower face of the said guide, a fairliolder adapted to be attached to the projecting end of the said arms, and a fan having the butt-ends of its sticks secured to the said fan-holder, substantially as set forth.

5. In a combined umbrella and fan, the combination, with an umbrella-stick, of a springactuated holding device mounted therein and including a pivotal carrying-arm, one end of which projects out of the said stick, a fanholder adapted to be removably attached to the projecting end of the said arm, and a fan having the butt-ends of its sticks pivoted in the said holder, with the exception of its central stick, which is rigidly connected therewith, spbstantially as described.
