UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IV. DAVIS, OF POPLAR BLUFF, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS H. MOORE, OF SAME PLACE.
RATCH ET HAN D-POWER.
SIBECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,677, dated. September 15, 1891.
Application filed May 8, 1891. Serial No. 392,071. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Poplar Bluff, in the county of Butler and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet Hand- Powers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hand-powers of that class known as ratchetlever powers, the object being to provide a device which shall be simple and economical in construction and reliable and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand-power constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, looking from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral l designates an upright, which may be made of any suitable material in one piece or in two parts, bolted together, as may be found most convenient or desirable. This upright is mounted upon a suitable base 2, and intermediate its ends is formed with arecess 3, through the lower portion of which passes a shaft 4, which is journaled in the standard or upright. Upon one end of this shaft is secured a drivingpulley 5. while the other end is provided with a cog-wheel 6, which meshes with a pinion 7, carried by a shaft 8, also journaled in the uprightand carrying at its other end a crankwheel 9. Located within the recess 3, and firmly secured to shaft 4, is a ratchet-wheel 10. Through the upper part of recess 3 passes a rod 12, which forms the fulcrum of a lever 13, which can oscillate thereon. One arm of this lever is extended, forming ahandie, while the short arm is provided on its under side with a lug 14, to which is pivoted a downwardly and inwardly extending pawl or arm 15, having upon its under side, at the free end, a series of ratchet-teeth 16,
which engage with the ratchet-wheel 10 on shaft 4. Intermediate this arm and the lever, and secured to the latter, is a spring 17, the free end of which bears upon the free end of the arm and serves to press the ratchet-teeth thereon into engagement with the ratchetwheel. The lever 13 upon thev opposite side of its fulcrum is provided with a downwardly-depending pawl 18, pivoted in a lug 20. A spring 21, secured to the lever, serves to throw this pawl into engagement with the ratchet-wheel.
Pivotally attached to the standard or upright are pawls 32, which are designed to engage with ratchets in the shafts 4 and 8 to prevent back motion thereof.
The operation is as follows: As the long arm of lever 13 is depressed the pawl 18 engages with the ratchet-wheel 10, the recessed. or cut-away portion at the lower end thereof enabling it to readily engage with the teeth of the wheel, thus partly rotating the same and, through the shaft4 and connections, the crank-wheel 9. Upon the return or up stroke of the. lever the ratchet-arm 15 will engage with the ratchet-wheel, which will be still further rotated, and as the operation is repeated a continuous rotary movement will be imparted to the driving-shaft 4. As thus constructed, four strokes of the lever will cause a full revolution of the driving-shaft, wherebya very effioient device for many useful purposes is produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a hand-power, the combination, with the standard having a recess therein, a drivingshaft provided with a ratchet-wheel, a drivin g-pulley, a cog-wheel, a shaft provided with a pinion meshing with said cog-wheel, and a crank-wheel, of the lever fnlcrumed in said standard, having pivoted pawls adapted to 5 engage with said ratchet-wheel, and springs for throwing said pawls into engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WV. DAVIS.
