Description

(No Model.)
J. N. SCHWALEN.
DRAFT ATTACHMENT FOE HAMES. No. 458,983. I Patented Sept. 1, 1891.
@313 Gwen W11,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN N. SOHIVALEN, OF HUDSON, \VISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF TYVO-THIRDS TO LEO KNOTT AND OTTO KNOTT, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
DRAFT ATTACHMENT FOR HAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,983, dated September 1, 1891.
Application filed February 12, 1891. Serial No. 381,219. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN N. SCHWALEN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of St. Croix and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Attachments for Hames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved trace attachment for hames, the object of my invention being to provide a device whereby the line of draft may be quickly and easily raised or lowered, according to the inclination of the driver or operator.
With this object in View my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the drawings hereunto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one member of a hame with my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 shows in detail the several parts.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates one member of a hame, which may be of wood or metal and of any desired construction. At suitable points along the side of the member I secure a series of eyes B, preferably three in number, the shanks being of such length that the eyes will be in vertical alignment with each other. A bolt C is passed through the eyes B, said bolt having a head b, screwthread 1), and the lower end of the bolt is riveted below the lowest eye B.
Between the upper and center eye B and the center and lower eyes threaded eyes D are arranged upon the bolt 0, and integral with each threaded eye D is a link or rod d, and upon the outer end of each link or rod d is formed an eye a, the eye on the lower link being threaded, for a purpose hereinafter explained. A bolt E is passed through the eyes 6, the lower end of said bolt being threaded and adapted to engage the lower threaded eye.
F indicates the trace or tug. (Shown in dotted lines.)
Now in practice the loop on the end of the trace is placed between the eyes 6 and the bolt E passed through the top eye, through the loop, and the lower end of the bolt threaded into the lower eye. The trace is now at tached to the hame, and when it is desired to raise or lower the line of draft the bolt C is turned in the required direction, and as the bolt 0 is threaded, and also the eyes D, the links 01 will be raisedor lowered, carrying with them the eyes 6, and consquently the trace F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a draft attachment for hames, the combination, with a hame, of the upper, center, and lower eyes B, secured thereto and in alignment one with the other, said eyes being smooth and unthreaded, a headed threaded bolt passing loosely through said eyes and riveted below the lowermost eye, the bars or rods (1, provided with threaded eyes at their inner ends corresponding to and engaging the bolt and with smooth unthreaded eyes at their outer ends, and a smooth bolt passing through said unthreaded eye and connecting the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN N. SCHVVALEN.
