ELI SVEET AND GEORGE M. FERGASON, OF ATHENS, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,767, dated September 1, 1891.
Application filed May 25, 1891- Serial No. 394.033. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that we, ELI SWEET and GEORGE M. FERGASON, citizens of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention consists in a new and improved combined sash fastener and lock, which is extremely simplein construction, the whole device being cast or formed in one piece, and is at the same time unusually effective in its operation, and the invention will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing our new and improved device acting as a sashlock. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device acting as a sash-fastener, the sash being partly raised. Fig. 3 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, of the combined sash fastener and lock. Fig. at shows the device secured to the upper sash of a window.
Referring to the several parts by their designating-numerals, 1 indicates the lower sash, and 2 the upper sash, illustrated in the drawings. To the inner side of the window-casing 3, at one side thereof, is pivotally mounted on a screw 4 the combined sash fastener and look. This consists of a central body part 5, from the lower end of which projects the locking-lever 6, which is formed with the recessed lower end 7 to adapt it to fit snugly over and against the upper end of the lower window-sash when the latter is run down or closed. The upper end of the body is formed with the outwardly-curved arm 8, having the weighted ball or knob 9 at its outer end. The curved inner upper edge of the body 5 is formed with the Wide locking rim or flange 10, which curves in a line eccentric to the central pivotal point of the body 5, so that as the arm 8 is raised the curved locking-edge of the cam will be pressed tightly against the frame of the lower sash.
To use the device as a sash-fastener, it is only necessary, after raising the lower sash to the desired height, to press the outer end of the arm 8 upward, thus pressing the wide locking-flange firmly against the side of the sash, so as to securely lock it in its adjusted position. It will be seen that the heavier the sash the more firmly it will lock itself by the downward pull on the lockingcam. To unfasten the sash, it is only necessary to raise it a little, which turns the cam outward, thus freeing the sash from its pressure, when the sash is free to slide downward by its own weight. When the sashisclosed, the weight of the knob 9 will swing the lower end of the lever G in over the upper end of the lower sash, into the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thus automatically locking the window-in its closed position, so that it will be impossible to raise it from the outside. To unlock the sash, it is only necessary to pull the knob 9 slightly outward to free the recessed lower end of the lever 6 from the upper end of the sash, when the sash can be raised to any desired point, where it is secured by pressing the knob 9 upward to cause the locking-flange 1O tobear against the side of the sash-frame.
The device may be used on an upper sash by securing it directly to the side of the sash, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of our combined sash fastener and lock will be readily understood.
It will be seen that the device is extremely simple in its construction, being cast or formed in one piece only, and can thereforebe placed on the market at a small cost.
The device fastens a sash firmly in its open or closed position or at any desired point, and is automatic in its operation as a sash-lock, as previously described. The locking-lever 6 is so arranged that itis braced directly from the center of the device, making it very strong and secure. The wide smooth locking-flange l0 enables the device to grip the sash firmly without marring it in the least, the device being so simple in its construction that it isimpossible for it to get out of order.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
