To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, WVILLIAM THOMAS RUTHERFORD and ALEXANDER JoNEs ROB- BERSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Napa, Napa county, State of California,

have invented an Improvement in Pillow- Sham Holders; and we hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.

Our invention relates to the class of holders for pillow-shams; and it consists in the novel construct-ion and arrangement of the hook-bar which supports the pillow-sham and the means for operating and controlling said I 5 bar to raise the sham and to hold it down, all

of which we shall hereinafter fully describe, and specifically point out in the claims.

The object of our invention is to providea holder for pillow-Shams of simple and compact construction and adapted to hold the sham in normal position and to raise it out of the way when not in use.

Referring to the accompanying drawings fora more complete explanation of our in- 5 vention, Figure 1 is an elevation of our holder, showing the hook-bar down in position to hold the sham in use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the hook-bar raised to elevate thesham out of the way when not in use. Fig. 3 is a 3 vertical section of socket D, showing the controlling-pawl.

A is the head-board of the bedstead. B is a vertically-movable bar having suitable hooks b. This bar is carried by a stem 3 5 O, which extends downwardly and is mounted in a suitable guide or guides, in which it is adapted to move up and down. The guide here shown is a socket-plate D, secured to the head-board.

E are toggle'levers, the lower members of which are pivoted to a fixed bearing below, here shown as connected with the top of the plate D, and their upper members are pivoted to the hook-bar B. Springs F act on these levers, and their tendency is to extend them vertically to raise the hook-bar. Supplemental springs G assist in this action. The face of the stem 0 of the hook-bar is made with rack-teeth or sockets c, and with these engages the end of a spring-pawl H, the head of which has a knob or button 71., by seizing hold of which the pawl may be withdrawn from its engagement.

The operation of our holder is as follows: The pillow-sham is suspended from the hookbar B. Then the bed is made up, the bar B is pushed down, its stem moving freely by the pawl, and when the bar is moved down far enough to allow the sham to fall properly over the pillow it is held in that position by the engagement of the pawl H with the rackface of stem 0. Now when the bed is to be used the pawl is pulled back from its engagement, and thereupon the springs, acting through the levers, raise the hook-bar, and thus the sham is lifted up out of the way and held there until needed again.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secnre by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pillow-sham holder comprising the hook-bar having arack-stem depending from its middle portion, a guide through which the stem passes, a retaining-pawl for the rackstem, the jointed levers having their outer ends connected with the guide and hook-bar, respectively, and springs acting against the lower members of theleversfor adjustingthe position of thehook-bar, substantially as herein described.

2. A pillow-sham holder consisting of the vertically-movable hook-bar having the rackstem, the guide in which the stem is mounted, the pawl engaging the stem for holding the bar down, the toggle'leve'rs connected with the bar, and suitable springs for actuating the levers and raising the bar, substantially as herein described.
