UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COSME GARCIA SAEZ, OF MADRID, SPAIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
'To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, OosME GARCIA SAEZ, of Madrid, Spain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms; and Ihereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention consists in forging in a piece with or in screwing onto the rear of the barrels of fire-arms a breech-chamber made to contain a cylindrical charge-holder for receiving an ordinary cartridge. An aperture at top allows of the insertion of the charge into the holder. A button moving in a slot and connected to the charge-holder is drawn forward in the slot, closes the aperture, and brings the cartridge in a line with the bore of the arm. The back of the breech-chamber is divided by a saw-cut or otherwise, and a bolt plain at top and threaded at bottom unites the parts so divided. Atail-lever is fixed to the bolt and lies on the top of the stock. By turning this lever from left to right the parts are separated, and the charge holder is easily moved in the breech-chamber. After a charge has been inserted and been moved by the button into a line with the bore, the lever is turned back, the divided parts of the chamber are brought forcibly together, and the breech rendered gas-tight.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings'is a viewof a gun constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a side View, and Fig. 3 a plan, of those parts to which this invention refers.
a is a-breech-chamber forged in a piece with or screwed onto the 'barrel is, and containing a cylindrical charge-holder, b, for receiving a cartridge. Z is an aperture through which the charge is inserted into the holder Z). c is a button moving in a slot and connected to the charge-holder. It is drawn forward in the slot, closes the aperture Z, and brings the cartridge in a line with the bore of the gun. d is a saw-cut dividing the back of the breechchamber, and g is a bolt, plain at top and threaded at bottom, and uniting the parts so divided. 0 is a tail-lever fixed to the bolt 9, and lying on the top of the stock. By turning the lever e from left to right the parts are separated, and by drawing back the button 0 in the slot the charge-holder b is moved in the breech-chamber into position for the insertion of a charge through the opening Z. After the charge has been inserted the button cis moved forward to bring the charge into a line with the bore. The lever e is turned back, and brings the divided parts of the chamber forcibly together, and the breech is rendered gastight.
Having now described the nature of the said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I shall state my claims as follows:
1. Forming the breech-chamber, as described, of one piece divided in the rear, so as to admit of contraction or expansion by the application of a suitable tightening device,'as set' forth.
2. In combination with an expansible breechchamber, a screw and actuating-lever, constructed and arranged for operation for rendering the parts of the breech gas-tight, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
