PRINTERS TYPE-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N O. 457,919, dated August 18, 1891. Application filed November 17, 1890. Serial No. 371.666. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM AYERs and BENJAMIN W. DEMAREST, both citizens of the United States, 'residing at West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Printers Type-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
Type-cases are usually made with stationary partitions forming boxes of diiferent sizes for the lower case and of uniform sizes for the upper case, and in some instances the boxes have been made of metal.
The object of the' present invention is to provide supports for the separate boxes, so that any one box can be lifted out without any other box becoming' displaced. With this object in view horizontal ledges are provided upon which the ranges of boxes rest, and the boxes are preferably made of metal in the form hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figures l and 2 are perspective views illustrating upper and lower type-cases. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper type-case without any boxes. Fig. 4 is a similar View of the lower case with most of the boxes removed, and Fig. 5 is a section in larger size through some of the removable boxes.
Each type-case is made with end pieces 2 and side pieces 3, forming a border to the back 4, and it is preferable to employ a central partition 5 to strengthen the case. The horizontal ledges 6 are of any suitable material fastened in place. WVe prefer and have shown ledges made of folded sheet metal in the form represented in larger size in Fig. 5, which folded stripsot metal are secured to the back 4 by tacks passing through the baseiianges of the strips. These ledges for the top case are preferably equidistant, as shown in Fig. 3; but for the bottom case they are in positions adapted to the different sizes of type-boxes, in order. that the sizes and arrangement of the type-boxes in the lower case generally employed in printing-offices may not be varied, and this renders it necessary to make some of the ledges full length and others to extend only part of the distance across the bottom of the case, as indicated in F1g.4.
The boxes a are preferably of metal, and they may be rectangular with square faces, and the angles of all or some of the boxes may be rounded, as indicated in Fig. 5, and these boxes set in freely between the respective ledges and are supported by them. It is advantageous to fold the top edges of the sheet-metal boxes so that the said edges are stiened by the double thickness of the metal, and it is also advantageous to make the lower sides ot' the boxes wider than the uppersides vof such boxes in order that the compositor may freely seize the top of the lower edge of any box to lift that box with its types out from the case whenever desired, and this can be done without taking hold of the edge of the adjacent box at the same time.
It will be apparent that each type-case can be of the usual size, and the arrangement of the type-boxes will not be changed, neither will the capacity of the case be diminished by the present improvements, and each box can be lifted out separately with facility, and in so doing the adjacent boxes are not disturbed, because they are supported by the respective ledges.
We claim as our invention-l l. The combination, in a type-case, of a back, edge strips, and fixed horizontal ledges, and removable metalboxes resting on the ledges, substantially as set forth.
2. The type-case having numerous boxes for types, each box being formed of sheet metal with one side of the box higher than and separate from the side of the adjacent box to allow for grasping the higher side of the box for removing the same without taking hold of the edge of the adjacent box, substantially as set forth.
3. The type-case having a back and edge strips and horizontal ledges formed of folded sheet metal secured to lche back, in eombinasheet metal secured to the back, substan tially 1o tion with the removable type-boxes adapted as set forth. i
to set between the ledges and deeper than Signed by us this 12th day of November, the Width of such ledges, substantially as set 1890.
5 forth. W. H. AYERS.
4. In a priuters type-ease, the oombina- B. WV. DEMAREST. tion, with the separate sheet-metal boxes, of lVitnesses: the holding ease having aback, border-strips, GEO. T. PINCKNEY,
acentral partition, and ledges made of folded WILLIAM G. MOTT.
