CLOTHES-LINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,617, dated August 11, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARLISLE F. MOORE, of Du Bois, in the county of Pawnee and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Lines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which form part of this, specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in metallic clothes-lines; and it consists in the construction which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved metallic clothes-line which is provided with bends or jaws in which the small articles are made to catch, and thus dispense with the necessity of clothes-pins for the purpose of holding them upon the line.

The accompanying drawing represents a clothes-line which embodies my invention.

A represents one strand of wire, which extends from one end of the line to the other, and which forms the supporting-wire, as will be seen, and B a second strand, which at regular intervals is bent or doubled, as shown at O, for the purpose of forming jaws in which the articles of clothing are made to catch. These two wires A B are twisted, soldered, or otherwise fastened together upon each side of the jaws at G, and the bottom of the jaws are also preferably soldered, twisted, or fastened together at D, as shown. By thus fastening the Wires at the lower end and upon each side of the jaws three clamps or holding parts are formed for the purpose of taking a secure hold upon the article that is to be suspended from the line. That portion of the wire B which forms the jaw is turned or bent in opposite directions at the top of each jaw, thus forming an open triangular-shaped space I, in which an end, corner, or portion of the article is inserted before itis moved outward into one of the horizontal clamps. Another portion or corner may be forced into the other horizontal clamp, and still another portion forced down into the jaw. These clamps take such a firm hold upon the article that there is no danger of it beingblown from the line, and the use of clothes-pins is entirely done away with. If the article is large it may be fastened in two or more of the jaws or clamps; butif the article is small it can be securely fastened in any one of the three clamps above described.

Having thus described my invention, I claim-- A clothes-line consisting of two wires, one being a supporting-wire and the other bent outward and doubled upon itself to form a triangular space between the supporting-wire and the bent portion of the other wire, the doubled portions of the wire diverging from one apex of the said triangular space and the supporting and bent wires diverging from the other apexes of the said space and twisted together at each side thereof, whereby a threeway jaw is formed, substantially as described.
