UNITED STATES ANTOINE REVEL, OF LYONS, FRANCE.
PATENT OFFICE.
UBMRELLA TIP-CU P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,607, dated August 11, 1891.
Application filed June 8, 1891. Serial No. 395,470. (No model.) Patented in France May '7. 1890, No. 205,435, and in England November 17, 1890,110. 18,560. I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTOINE REVEL, a citizen of the French Republic, residing atLyons, in France, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Umbrella-Closers, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France, No. 205,435, dated May 7, 1890, and in England No. 18,560, dated November 17, 1890,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a spring-actuated tubular holder designed to retain the ends of the ribs of an umbrella near the stick; and the object of the invention is more especially to provide such a holder so that it may be sold ready-made with the handle for fixing on a stick.
The improvements consist in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 4 is a section showing a modification.
A tube 25 of small diameter is inserted into a pit cut therefor in the handle P, so as to project from said pit. Near the outer edge of this tube tis an outwardly-extended flange t to prevent the sliding holder passing off said tube. The said sliding holder is a tube g, having at or near its center a cross-diaphragm g with a hole in the center sufficient only for the passage of said tube. Against the end of the handle is an annular plate 0, slightly flanged at the edge to serve as a guide for the sliding holder g, and between the sliding holder and the annular plate is a spiral spring 7', encircling the inner tube t and tending to press the holder g away from the annular plate 0. The umbrella-stick b is intended to be fitted in the inner tube t, which is of sufficient diameter to receive it. Part of the rim of the holder g may be cut away with a recess 9 to receive the head of a pin p. This pin may be driven into the stick or it may be formed as a projection on the flange F, or it may be made as a raised rib on the tube t, taking into the recess 9 which is then located in the inner edge of the diaphragm g, as in Fig. 4. By this device, after the holder g is drawn back from rib ends it may be slightly turned to bring the pin out of line with the slot and in front of the solid metal of the holder, so that the latter cannot be moved back onto the ribs until released by turning back to its former position.
I claim as my invention The combination, with an umbrella orparasol handle P, having a pit therein, of the tube 15, fixed in said pit, a flange t on said tube, a flanged plate 0 on the end of said handle, a rib-end holder g, having a diaphragm gsliding on said tube 2, a plate c, a spiral spring 0', located between said plate 0 and diaphragm g, a detaining projection 19, and a recess g in which said projection is adapted to take when the rib-end holder is in position for retaining the ribs, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in presence of two witnesses.
