IVILLIAM E. V'EIEDON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 457,176, dated August 4,1891.
Application file@ April 24, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WELDoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Douches; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make, use, and practice the same.
Hy invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in vaginal douches, which consist in the arrangement of parts and details of construction, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the drawings, described, and pointed out in the specification.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of thls application, wherein similar letters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the entire specification, Fig# ure l is a View showing the entire device connected together; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the vagina-guard and liquidsupply tube; Fig. 3, a top plan of the guard; Fig. l, a similar view of the discharge-nozzle or end of supply-tube.
The letterA is used to indicate the ordinary comp'ression-bulb, and B the flexible connection or coupling pipe which unites the former with the liquid-supply tube C. Said connecting-pipe is secured to the supply-tube and compression-bulb in any suitable manner. The outer portion of the tube C is somewhat enlarged and screw-threaded, as shown at c, which forms the annular shoulder c. The enlarged end is gradually tapered and provided with the elongated openings d, of which any suitable number may be formed. This enlarged perforated end forms a guard for the tube C, so that with the backflow of the liquid the discharge-passage d of tube C is prevented from becoming clogged or stopped by the tissues of the vaginal mucous membrane, as heretofore has been the case. The openings formed in the guard intersect the discharge-opening d of the supply-tube. Said tube isV surrounded by the guard D, which is secured thereto by means of the screw-threaded portion cl2, while through open end d3 projects the free end of the supply-tube. By preference I construct the guard of hard rubber, which permits of f Serial No. 390,308. (No model.)
distention of the vagina without causing irri- 5 5 tation to the Walls thereof, which does resuit from use of soft rubber in such connection.
By constructing the supply-tube and protecting-guard integrally I overcome leakage.
Ordinarily the cleansing or medicinal fluid when ejected through vaginal douches immediately flows off through the supply-tube into the compression-bulb. unless other means for its escape is provided. By this quick olfliow the discharged liquid only partially serves its purpose and often fails entirely. This defect also accompanies the use of a soft-rubber shield or guard.
I have found that by placing the cock E within the supply-tube the patient or user of the douche may, by merely turning the same soas to stop the passage d entirely, keep the discharged liquid in place for any length of time by merely holding the vaginal shield or guard tightly in place, which may be easily done by pressing withl the fingers upon face f of said shield.
Instead yof using the stop-cock E, I am aware that a compressing-clamp may be applied to the connecting-pipe. While such a stoppage would answer the purpose exceedingly Well, it is nevertheless liable and possible that the weight of the suspended compression-bulb would pull the connecting-pipe from the'free end of the supply-tube. By
-thus constructing the vaginal douche I dispense with the liability of quickly becoming Worn out by having to unite a number of parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to procure protection in by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
A supply-pipe for vaginal douches, having its outer portion enlarged so as to form a protecting-guard provided with a series ot' discharge-openings, regulator adapted to open or close the discharge-passage, and the guard or shield surrounding the supply-tube, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
