BLACKING-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 456,911, dated July 28, 1891.

' To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SCOTT, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Brushesof which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in daubers, or that class of blacking-brushes which are used for the purpose of applying moist blacking to boots or shoes, and it constitutes certain improvements on the invention for which Letters Patent of the United States, numbered 446,393, were granted to me February 10, 1891; and the object of this improvement is to provide a telescopically-11lovable protecting-sleeve to a dauber held in a fixed position on its handle and to provide facilities for adjusting the dauber-brush in its surrounding collar, so as to compensate for the wearing away of the end of said brush. This object I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form parts of this specicification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improvement as applied toa polishing-brush, the latter being shown in side elevation. Figs. 2 and 3 are partial longitudinal sections of a modification of myinvention, made in the form of a dauber-brush,the figures, respectively, showing the protecting-sleeve in its raised and depressed positions. Fig. lis an inverted plan View of the latter with the brush removed from the collar. Fig. 5 is a partial longitudinal section of a modification of my invention made in the form of a dauber-brush provided with my adjusting mechanism, the telescopic sleeve being therein dispensed with; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a slight modification of the latter in respect to the arrangement of the adjusting-screw for the dauber-brush with part of the collar broken away and part of the bristles removed from the brush.

As represented in the drawings, A designates the brush part of my dauber, which is preferably made on a circular disk 1 inclependently of any handle. Said brush part is surrounded by a stationary collar 2, which, as shown in Fig. 1, may be secured to the back ,of a polishing-brush B; or (shown in Figs. 2 to 6) it may be secured to a handle 0 made specially therefor. Said collar is made to admit the disk 1 freely thereinto, and its bore is provided with one or more guide-ribs 3, which fit into corresponding grooves in the periphery of the disk 1 for the purpose of preventing said disk from acquiring a rotative movement during the operation of adjusting it inwardly or outwardly in respect to the outer end of the collar 2, in the manner hereinafter explained.

D designates a sleeve, which is fitted to slide telescopically on the outside of the collar 2, said sleeve being normally retained in a position where its outer end will extend beyond the outer end of the brush part A by means of a spring 4., which exerts its pressure against a lever 5, which has one of its extremities engaged in a hood or pocket 6, attached to or formed on one side of said sleeve. As shown in Fig. 1, the lever 5 is fulcrumed, as at '7, in a channel-formed handle 8, attached to the back of the polishingbrush B, for the purpose of affording suitable means for using said brush. The lever 5 is fitted to move easilyin the hollow side of the handle 8, and the outward extension of said lever should correspond nearly to that part of said handle, so that when the lever 5 is swung upward the corresponding parts of the lever and handle will be substantially alike. As shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4., the lever 15 is fulcrumed to lugs 9, attached to the under side of the handle 0 at the extremity of the latter that is opposite to the one 011 which the collar 2 is fixed. In both arrangements of the lever, whether said lever is arranged like the lever 5 in Fig. 1 or like the lever 15 in Figs. 2, 3, and 4., when the grasp of the hand is applied to the handle, either 0 or 8, said lever will be moved to force the sleeve D into its depressed position, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to allow the bristles of the brush part A to protrude beyond the end of 5 the collar 2, as required, when blacking is to be applied with the dauber. As soon as the grasp of the hand is removed from the handle of the brush the spring at will force the lever, whether 5 or 15, to resume its normal position, and thereby the sleeve D will be moved to its outer position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; but, as shown in the modifications illustrated in Figs. 5 and G, the telescopic sleeve 1) and the operating-lever 5 or 15 shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 are dispensed with.

E designates an adj listing-screw by which the disk 1 and the attached brush partA can be adjusted inwardly or outwardly, as occasion may require. The head of said screw may be located in the brush part A, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or it may be placedin the outer face of the handle (3, as shown in Fig. 5. This mode of adjustment may be used on any dauber in which the brush part A is formed on a disk or block that is movable in the collar 2, whether-the telescopic sleeve D is used or not.

hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a dauber-brush surrounded by a protecting-collar, a sleeve fitted to slide telescopically onsaid collar, and a spring-actuated lever connected to said sleeve, as and for the purpose herein specified.

2. The combination of a dauber-brush formed on a movable head and surrounded by a protecting-collar, which is stationary on the handle of said brush, and an adjustingscrew connected to said movable head, whereby the dauber-brush can be adjusted inwardly and outwardly in the bore of said collar, substantially as herein specified. 1

The combination of a dauber-brush formed on a movable head, which is fitted to move in a stationary collar which encircles said brush, an adj listing-screw connected to said movable head, a sleeve fitted to slide telescopically on said collar, and a lever connected to said sleeve, substantially as herein specified.
