Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVERETT MUNSON, OF SAYBROOK, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45,622, dated December 27, 1864.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVERETT MUNsoN, of Saybrook, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snpporting-Trusses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a back view. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a section of the pad with its attachment, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the manner of shortening or lengthening the mainspring.
A represents the mainspiing. This is made in the usual form, and covered with leather, the free end of which terminates in a strap for buckling around the body inthe usual manner. The pad end of this spring is prolonged by a bent arm, B, to the end of which the pad is attached in the manner here, inafter stated. The arm B curves downwardand terminates over the center of the pubis. The attachment to themainspring is by means ot' a series of holes in the spring, into which short studs a, in the piece B enter, the two parts being held in contact by the clasp C, which embraces both parts. There being several sets ot' holes, af, in the spring, the arm B can be adjusted to any desired length,
and thus the same spring adapted to diferent- .n
sized bodies, or rather a truss thus constructed is more readily fitted to the patient.
The pad D has a length and breadth sufijcient to cover both inguinal rings, and` is further provided with a button or elevation, E, of a circular form, covering these openings in the walls of the abdomen.
The pad D is attached to the arm B by means of a ball-andsoeket joint, as shown in Fig. 3, and by this means is allowed to turn in any direction with the utmost freedom, and thus adapting itself to any position of the body. y,
Thus it will be seen that this truss is ar ranged with a large pad, which reaches across above the pubis, and is intended for either right or left inguinal hernia, or for both at the same time, the elevations E being attached to the pad at suitable distances.
What l claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The spring A, arm B, studs c a, and holes a a a a', in combination with the pad D, circular pieces E, and ball-and socket joint, Fig. 3, the several parts being constructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purpose herein set forth.
'LEVERETT MUN SON.
