Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,-
S-YLVESTER LEWIS, OF ROCHESTER, NEV YORK.
IMPROVED METALLIC HEAD FOR BARRELS.
Specification formingvpart of Letters Patent No. 45,507, dated December 20, 1864.
To all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, SYLvEsTEE LEWIS, of I-ochester, Monroe county, and State of NewV York, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Head for Barrels Containing Oil and other Fluids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to l the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' my invention consists in providing for barrels and casks designed to contain oil and other fluids a metallic head which shall be absolutely tight and prevent the escape of any portion of the contents thereof by surrounding the rim of such head with two or more continuous beveled projections designed to fit tightly into corresponding creases or crozes on the inner side and near the ends of the staves, where the head is usually placed,
which beveled projections and the space between them are covered with a coating of gumshellac or like material in fluid form. which gradually hai-dens after suoli head is fltted in.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
I take a circular piece of iron or other suitable metal, represented by Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings, of the thickness of half an inch or more, and of a diameter suited to the barrel or Cask head desired, on the outer side of which is hollowed out a circular space, (represented in Fig. 1 by the 1ettersAA,)with an equal depth in the parts of about threeeighths of an inch, and of a diameter less by about one-half of an inch than that of such circular piece of iron or other metal. I cast said heads with two or more beveled projections around and upon the periphery ofthe same, about one-eighth of an inch or more in width at the base thereof and the same distance apart, extending out from such periphery about one-third of an inch, more or less, in the form represented by Fig. 3, which presents a view of said head, with said projections represented only in Fig. 3, which are marked B B, and designed to tit tightly into corresponding icreases or Crozes made on the inside of the barrel or Cask staves, and near the ends thereof, in the usual place for that purpose.
Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of said head, with its hollowed space and its beveled projections. Each of said projections is to be so shaped that the space or creases between the same shall project farther out, or, in other words, shall be less deep than 'the inside of said barrel above and below said beveled edges or projections. That part of said metallic head around and adjoining the said hollowed part thereof is to be raised about threeeighths of an inch or more and extended outward, so as to press firmly against the staves of said barrel or Cask at the chine thereof, for their protection against breaks or injuries. Before inserting said barrel or cask heads I apply to the rim thereof a coating of gumshellac or similar material in fluid form.
\V hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The application to a metallic barrel or cask head of two or more beveled projections upon the outer rim thereof', as above described, and the application of gum-shellae or other similar substance to the same, as herein set forth.
2. The circular elevation around and adjoining said space A A, for the protection of the staves, as aforesaid.
