ERNEST IVALWYK, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO \VILLIAM DEMUTH & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
COVER FOR PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,785, dated June 23, 1891.
7 Application filed April 4, 1891. Serial No. 387,652. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST \VALWYK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers for Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cover which is intended particularly for bowls of tobaccopipes.
The peculiar and novel construction of my cover is pointed out in the following specifition and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan or top View. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the plane w a, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan of one of the slides detached. Fig. 5 is a plan or top view of a modification. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan of the same. Fig. 7 is a transverse section in the plane y y, Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a plan or top view of one of the slides detached.
In the example shown in Figs. 1 to at, inclusive ,the letter A designates the top plate, through the'center of which extends the pivot a, which is provided with a nut e. The pivot a supports a case B, which carries the slides C. These slides are provided with slots 0, which engage the pivot a, and they work in recesses 1) formed in the sides of the case B. On the outer end of the slides C are formed lips cl, and said slides can be moved in or out,
being guided in their movements by the pivot a and the recesses b. \Vhen the sides have becn'moved into the desired position they can be clamped by means of the nut e.
In the example shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, the slides 0 move in recesses formed in the case B, and they are provided with 40 slots 0, which engage the pivot a precisely the same as above stated; but the top plate A is provided on its inner surface with a spiral groove f, and each of the slides C has a tooth g, which engages the spiral groove f. By turning the caseB on the pivot a the slides are moved in or out by the action of the spiral groove fupon the teeth g, and at the same time the slides are retained in the required position without using the nut eon the pivot.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing description that the slides O of my cover can be adjusted to the bowls of tobacco-pipes of different sizes, and that they can be made to engage the inside or the outside of the bowl.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. A cover for the bowls of tobacco-pipes, composed of a plate A, a series of radiating slides 0, carried by said plate and provided with lips d, and means for retaining the slides in the required position, substantially as described.
2. A cover for the bowls of tobacco-pipes, composed of a plate A, a spiral groove formed on said plate, a series of radiating slides O engaging said spiral groove, and lips formed on the radiating slides, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST WALYVYK.
