\V. SCOTT,
APPROVAL-SHEET FOR STAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 454,416, dated June 16, 1891. Application filed March 5,1891. Serial No. 383,815- (NO model.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLF F. ALBRECHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tompkinsville, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Approval-Sheets for Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to approval-sheets IO for stamps, and is designed to prevent the changing without detection of any stamp or article originally fixed to the sheet.
The invention consists in certain novel fea tures, which are hereinafter described, refer- I5 ence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view approval-sheet constructe of a portion of an d according to my lnvention. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a; to of Figs. 1
and 2.
Approval-sheets for exhibiting and displaying stamps for inspection and examination are marked off 011 their front faces into suit able divisions of proper size for the stamps to be exhibited. The stamps are fixed to the sheet by means of gummed tags applied to the stamps and sheet. The sheets .(one or more) having stamps thus secured to them are sent by dealers to customers who desire to examine them, and who, after making their selections, are expected to send them back to the dealers in the same condition as when sent, except as to those which are purchased 3 5 and retained by the customers at the prices which may be marked on the sheet below the several stamps. This method of exhibition of the stamps gives an opportunity to those who are dishonest to purloin valuable and rare stamps by detaching them from the sheet and substituting cheap or inferior stamps in place thereof.
The object of my invention, therefore, is to prevent the change or removal of any stamp 5 or article originally fixed to the sheet and the substitution therefor of one that is inferior or of less value, and if any such change is effected to detect the culprit.
I carry out my invention by providing the sheet A with tongues B, cut or punched out ions 0 of the s11 be of any to itself, an opening dle part of the to along its bottom drawings. T
and a stamp or thereto the stamp tongue. T placed on t openings E.

E, which may be at the mid- 6o otl nti
sed through said opening means the removal from the sh stamp or article Gand the substitution of another stamp in its place can be readil tected, as the exposed back of such s p or article will not have upon it 'iate mark or impression aforesaid. I do not restrict in tongues from the body It will be observed that made through the sheet u cupied by the stamp, back of the stamp is versing the sheet, and any made on the back of the sl opening will come upon the portion of the p which is so exposed, and
ngue or along either side or edge, as is illustrated in the he faces of the several tongues are provided with gums or other suitable adhesive material F, which is dried, so that when afterward the gummed surface is moistened er article G is applied article will adhere to the he stamps or other articles G are he tongues in such cover the openings E, so that sheet over upon its face with it most a portion of the backs of other articles is exposed to view While the shoe tion it is marked or stamped n ient marking or stamping too nor that the mark or ll nuation across the edges pening and come upon the portion ack of the stamp or article G which on turning the s back upperthe stamps or through said it-h any convenlin such a mannpression made thereby E, by which eet of such ubstiyself to forming the Y of the sheet.
the openings E are nder the space ocso that a portion of the exposed to view on reieet across the substitution of a stamp or Je at once detected.
positions as to 7c t is in this posi- 75 y demark or print 5 hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An approval-sheet for stamps or other articies provided with perforations or openings 5 made in them through which a portion of the backs of the stamps or articles affixed to the front of the sheet is exposed to View, substantialiy as and for the purpose above described.
In testimony whereof 1 have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing xo witnesses.
RUDOLF F. ALBRECHT.
