Description

(No Model.) I
D. W. BRUNTON.
DEVICE FOR SAMPLING ORES. No. 454,120. Patented June 16,1891.
Wwemes:
JMZZA UNITED STATES DAVID V. BRUNTON,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF ASPEN, COLORADO.
DEVICE FOR SAMPLING ORES.
SPECTFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,120, dated June 16, 1891. Application filed Jctober 13, 1890. Serial No. 368,018. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID W. BRUNTON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, having declared my intention to become a United States citizen, residing at Aspen, in the county of Pitkin and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Device for Sampling Ores, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices or apparatus employed in taking from a large quantity of ore a small portion which shall be an accurate sample of the whole, and maybe substantially described as follows:
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A is a handle; B, a blade or tray, made, preferably, of steel, upon the under side of which are the raised sides 0 O and the central partitions D D. The two partitions I) D are connected at the handle end with the closed curved backE, to which is attached thewooden handle A. I
To sample a lot of crushed ore, the device is used as follows: The blade or tray is pushed into the ore until the spaces B B and F are partially filled, when it is lifted and drawn back' simultaneously with a gradually-increasing speed until near the side of the operator, when its backward motion is suddenly arrested and the apparatus thrust rapidly forward, while the extreme end of the handle is'slightly depressed. This causes the ore in the compartments B B to shoot out over the back of the blade while the portion of ore in the compartment F is retained therein by the curved back E, from whence it is discharged by arresting the forward thrust of the blade, by which operation the ore contained in the compartment F is deposited in a separate pile and at a considerable distance from that ejected from the compartments B B. After the original lot has been divided in this manner the pile resulting from the discharge from the compartment F is subjected to the same operation, which is repeated until the result ant sample is small enough for the purpose for which it is intended.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a handle and blade provided with raised sides and partitions dividing the upper surface of the blade into two or more compartments, one or more of which are closed at one end, or so arranged that the ore upon the blade may be divided into two or more separate and distinct portions.
