COAT HANGER.
No. 453,586. Patented June 2,1891.
NITEI) STATES PATENT OFFICE ALFRED MALCOLM MCDONALD, OF BRATTLEBOROUGH, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL \V. KIRKLAND, OF SAME PLACE.
COAT-HAN G ER.,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,586, dated June 2, 1891.
Application filed July 16,1890. Serial No. 358,949. (No model.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED MALCOLM Mo DONALD, of Brattleborough, in the county of \Vindham and State of Vermont, have in- 5 vented a new and useful Improvement in Hangers for Suspending Coats and other Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for susr pending the are or yoke forming part of such hangers, my object being to overcome a difficulty common to all hangers heretofore con structed-viz., the distortion of the back of the collar of the garment resulting from its con- I tact with the perpendicular suspending wire or hook, thus straining, and stretching the cloth and causing the collar to set off and away from the neck when the coat is worn. This object I accomplish by the means hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front perspective view of my hanger, showing the are or yoke and the form of the suspending-wire; and Fig. 2 is a longi- 2 5 tudinal vertical section through the center of the are, showing the manner of securing the suspending-wire to the are and also the form of the hook.
The are a may be made of wood or any suitable material approximating in form to the curves of the human shoulders, and may be varied in shape to adapt it to support garments to be worn by men, women, children, 820., as de sired. The suspending-wi re a is secured in the 3 5 center of the are a, preferably in the manner shown in Fig. 2, by being passed vertically through the arc and having its end upset over a washer on the under surfacethereof. From the upper surface of the are, passing through a transverse notch I) out therein, the wire a is bent backward from the vertical plane of the arc and at a right angle thereto for a suitable distance, usually about two inches, thence upward and forward by angles or curves in the same plane until a point is reached immedi- 5 ately over the point of attachment of the wire to the are, when the wire terminates in a suitable supporting-hook, which I prefer to form, as shown in the drawings, bybending the wire upward in a circular curve transverse to its former direction, so that the entire hook portion will lie in a vertical plane of the arc. The various bends in the wire described are made at such distances from the are as to form an opening or loop in the wire, afiord ing suitable space to receive the collar of the garment and prevent its contact with the wire.
It will be found when a garment is applied to the hanger constructed as described that the weight of the garment and the consequent strain will be distributed evenly along the shoulders, where it will be least injurious, and that very little will come upon the collar, especially the rear portion thereof, which will lie in the described bend of the suspending-wire free from tension, pressure, or any danger of distortion.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A coat-hanger consisting of an are or yoke of suitable material approximating in form to the human shoulders, having a suspendingwire secured in the center of the are, said wire bein thence bent backward beyond the vertical plane of the arc, thence upward, and
thence forward in the same plane, forming an opening or loop to receive the coat-collar, and terminating in a supporting'hook having its point of suspension located over the point of attachment of the wire to said are, substantially as set forth.
ALFRED MALCOLM MCDONALD.
