CARViNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,487, dated June 2, 1891. Application filed Marcil 21, 188i). Serial No. 304,140- lNo model-l To all whom, [t may concern..-
le it known that I, SINGLIGTON il. Kimi, a citizen of the United States, residing at the cit-y of (raud Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented eertain new and useful improvements in tfarvingniachiues, of which the following is a specification.
)ly invention relates to that class of carving-machines which usel a rotary cutter to fashion the stock into the required shape, and is peculiarly adapted to that class of machinos which use a pattern and a dummy or follower and a revolving cutter which works upon the stock, producing a copy or duplicate of the pattern', and the invention consists in the novel arrangement and construetion of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the drawings hereto attached, in which- Figui-el is a frontelevation of the carvingmachine, showing a side view of the pattern. li`ig. .3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view on line a; .v of Fig. i. lfig. '.1 is a side elevation, and Fig. ll is a sectional view of the sliding shaft 011 line y y of Fig. 3.
Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
rlhe upper frame of the machine is shown hy i3, which may be supported by the lugs A A or in any suitable manner. 'ihe fraine 13 has an oscillating movement, turning on the ends of set-screws G G as journals. 'ihe upper frame is provided with a counter-balance, which in the present example is illustrated in the drawings as consisting of an extension of the said upper frame beyond its fuicrum ina direction opposite to the end which connects with and supports the lower swinging frame, and thereby serves to counteract the weight of the lower swinging frame and its attachmentor t0 substantially perform such oiliee. i3 is another swinging frame turning on inner ends of set-screws (5 f5 as journals. 'lhese frames l and li always swing in vertical planes. 'l`he lower extensions of frame li' are provided with journal-lj oxes l) i) for the sliding shaft l.
t.' is a longitudinally -sliding frame supported in the guides ti tl G G of the frame lhe frame C is provided with depending arms t' and C, the arm tf terminating in n. journal-box 1) and the arm tl bearing the pattern-dummy 'l". 'ihe frame C, as shown,
is provided with the hand-piece or handle li for the convenience of the operator in giving the longitudinal motion to the frame.
'ihe shaft ll is provided with a longitudinal slot l, adapted to receive the tongue 2 of the pin l. This pin i passes through one side of the sleeved pulley W and attaches the pulley W to the shaft E. A set-screw 3 is used to hold the pin in position. 1`he function of the pin i, screw 3, and slot 4 is to attach the pulley to the shaft E, so that the revolution of the pulley revolves the shaft and at the same time allows for alongitudinai movement of the shaft E within the sleeves.
Y is a double nut ou the shaft E, designed, in connect-ion with the nut l, to secure the shaft in any desired position with reference to the frame C and to so att-ach this shaft to thc frame C that the shaft and cutting-tool can be moved to and from the stock by moving the frame C.
'lhe stock (shown in the drawings by P') is attached by suitable clamps te the support 'ihe pattern i is held by suitable clamps to the supper-tty.
Q Q are brackets or braces attached to the table-top N and serve merely as supports for t) and O'.
'ihe table-top N is supported on the crosspieees R it', which cross pieces are supported by the table-frame M. Attached to the table-top is the strip lt, which strip is clasped between the screw-adjusting bolt S and the strip It. 'lhis construction allows foralongitudinaladjustment of the table-top and parts connected thereto.
'i`hc shaftl turns in the journal-boxes 5 5, on which are rigidly fixed the pulleys .l and J. 'ihe revolution of the cutter 'i` is received through the bolts l( and if over the pulleys J, J', and J. 'lhe power is supplied to the pulley .l by any suitable mechanism.
l5 referring to ifig. i it will be observed that as the cutter 'i and follower or dummy 'il are both connected with and supported by the horizontally-siiding frame t4 they necessarily move therewith in a right line horizontally. rihc cutter and dummy are supported by separate arms of the frame C, as shown,
iCO
but are in the sinne direet line and are capable of moving together or in unison in a. hori- '/,ontal plane :tml at, right angles to the parallel supports t) t i', which are placed opposite to eaeh other, as shown, one of said supports being adapted to carry the stock to be operated upon, while, theother supports or carries the. pattern. 'lhese supports t) ti', as shown, are rigidly connected or attached to the tabletop by m :aus of the brackets or braces Q Q, `secured thereto. It will be observed that the. supports t) are rigidly connected with each other thi-(nigh the brackets Q Q and table-top N, and are consequently movable together longitudinallyl or horizontally when the table-top i\' is adjusted by means of the bolt. or serew S, as hereinlnfore described.
'l`he rotary journal-shaftll is ,iournaled in the swingingr frame l in line with the a.\'is of the independent pivots (i, on which said fralno turns.
lt. will be observed that the upper swingingr frame l carrie-s a drivepulley.l' andthe lower frame. ll' carrie-S two pulleys .l and J, one pulley beingr connected by a belt tothe pulley on the upper frame and the other by a pulley on tho shaft of the cutting-tool. lloth frames li nml ll swing ou pivots independent of the pulley-slnifts, and the upper frame is provided with a conliter-balance, as before described, to eountcrbalanee the weightof the lower swingingr fraine nml its attachments.
'l`he frame li, being pivoted at t1' ti', allows fora free vertical motion, while the pivoted frame, ll' aml the sliding frame allow a free. lateral motion at their lower ends, so that. the cutter can be readily carried over the stock. byplacingthestoekuprighttheehips produced by the rovolvingeuttcr drop freely from the stock, leaving the developing ligure always in plain view of the operator.
'l`hu machine may be used as a free-hand machine, in which case the pattern and dumm v would perform no function.
llaving thus described my invention, what [claim to have invented, und desire to secure by Letters latent, is-` l. lu a earviiig-machine, the combination of an upper pivoted frame adapted to impart vertical motion and a lower frame pivotod to said upper frame, swinging in vertieal planes and adapted to give free lateral swinging motion, the horizontally -sliding frame. mounted in guides across the lower end portion of the lower pivoted frame and havinga jouriutl-boxm.cutter-shaft journaled in said journal-box and moving lengthwise in unison with the slidingr frame, andthe cutterhead supported by the cutter-shaft, substantially as described.
ln a earving-maehine, the combination of nu upper frame pivoted to oscillate in a vertical plane,alaterally-spinging fraine pivoted to the ripper' frame :unl rising and fallin cr therewith and provided at its lower end with :1 journal-lun; :i boriyontally-sliding frame mounted in bearings across the lower end portion of the lower swinging frame and provided with a ,ionrnal-box,an.lacutter-shaft journalcd in the box on the horizontally-sliding frame, moving therewith and sliding and rotatingr in the bo.\' of the lower swinging frame, substantially as described.
