UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GERMANY.
SEW/ING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,472, dated June 2, 1891.
Application filed August 28, 1390. Serial No. 363,251. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMANN CARL Gaos, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Ober-Ursel, near Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lock-Stitch Sewing-Machines for Attaching Soles to Shoes or Boots, of which the following in a specification.
This invention "relates to the boot and shoe sewing-1n achinefor which Letters Patent No. 375,244 were issued'De'cember 20, 1887 to J. Albrecht; and the invention has for its object to improve the former construction and to provide novel means for supporting and operating the take-up and moving the same laterally as it approaches the limit of its stroke toward the needle, to place the thread in engagement with the latter, and prevent the take-u p from striking the last or sole, es-
pecially at those points where they are curved. To accomplish this object the invention involves the features of construction, the combination or arrangement of devices, and the principles of operation hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a sewing-machine containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of a guide. Fig. 3 is a side elevalion'of a modification. Fig. 4. is a detail plan view, partly in section, of the take-up of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail View of a fork.
In the drawings, the letter a indicates the driving-shaft, and b is a shaft capable of lengthwise motion. Said shaft 1; supports the needle-carrying head 0, having a hooked needle 0', and an awl-carrying head (I, having an awl d. The heads 0 d are oscillated or rocked by the levers e f, fulcrumed at W and actuated by a suitable cam-disk on shaft (1. The thread-guide D for the thread 1 is actuated by the link and lever E E, provided with a restoring spring or weight F.
The construction and operation of the parts thus far named, it will be noticed, is the same as that set forth in said United States Patent to Albrecht, so that adetailed description thereof is not deemed necessary here.
The take-up arm or stitch-tightening arm 00 has a roller X for the thread Z. Said arm isconnected by a pivot 03 to a lever or. arm 00', fulcrumed on the driving-shaft a. A link 2 connects the arm on to the lever or arm 0, fulcrumed at NV and actuated by a suitable groove in the cam-disk u. The movements of the levers "0 a1 oscillate the take-up 00 from the position shown in Fig. 1 in full lines to the position there indicated by broken lines and back again, so as to properly take up the thread.
The arm 00 has a guide-roller A, which runs in the guide or groove A The forward end of the guide A is slightlybent to one side, as seen in Fig. 2, so that as the arm ac approaches the end of its forward stroke said arm is oscillated or given a small side movement or lateral swing about pivot x by the roller A- running into the inclined or bent part of groove A This lateral movement of the arm x brings the thread Z into engagement with the needle 0, said needle being hooked as described in said Albrecht patent. The lateral swing of the arm to about pivot 00 causes the free end of said arm x to describe a curve or part of a circle with the pivot 00 as its center, so that when the sewing takes place along a concave partsuch as the arch of the last or concave part of the solethe arm at will not strike or chafe against the last or shoe. As seen in Fig. 1, the lateral swing of the free end of the arm 00 cuts the vertical paths of the oscillating needle c'- and awl d.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the link 2 is omitted and the arm 1; is provided with an extension '0, forming with said arm n a bell-crank lever. The arm 1; is provided with a roller A, engaging the guide A which in this modification is secured to the lever 00, to which the take-up arm 00 is connected by the pivot The lever to and take-up a: swing between the branches of the fork g", said branches being somewhat inclined at their free ends, so that as the take-up x approaches the Work said take up is swung laterally against the resistance or spring .2.
The shuttle, its thread, and its actuating mechanism are not shown herein, as they are similar in construction and operation to the corresponding parts in said Albrecht patent.
Then the hooked needle 0 penetrates the sole 5, the take-11p has been somewhat laterally transplaced, so that not only the hook-needle is enabled easily to catch the thread, but also the take-up a: is prevented from striking against the last or sole even at those points where the last or sole forms a curve.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the driving-shaft having a cam and the vertically-oscillating awl and hooked needle, of a take-up-snpporting arm loosely hung on the driving-shaft and having a pivot at its lower end, the laterally-movable take-up connected with said pivot, an actuating-lever engaging the cam and serving to swing the'supporting-lever on the driving-shaft as a center, and means for moving the take-up lever laterally as it approaches the limit of its stroke toward the hooked needle, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the driving-shaft having a cam and the verticallvoscillating awl and hooked needle, of a take-up-supporting lever loosely hung on the driving-shaft and having a pivot at its lower end, a laterally-movable take-up connected with said pivot, an actuatingdever engaging the cam and serving to swing said supporting-lever on the driving-shaft as a center, a grooved guide located below the supportinglever, and a roller engaging the grooved guide, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the vertically-pscillating awl and a vertically oscillating hooked needle, of a take-11p w, a guide A? for said take-up, said guide having an inclined portion for giving a lateral throw to the takeup, a supporting-arm w for said take-pp, and an actuatingl-ever Q7, connected to said takenp, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a driving-shaft having a cam and the vertically-oscillating awl and hooked needle, of a take-np-supporting
