Beit known that I, CHARLES BEAN-Scion HUNT, a subjectot the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 59 Holborn Viaduct, London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, (for which 1 have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 12,959, dated August 18, 1890; in France, No. 210,601, dated January 5, 1891; in Belgium, No. 93,867, dated January 8, 1891; in Germany, No. 60,980, dated January 16, 1891; in Italy, Vol. XXV, 29,012, Vol. LVII, 61, dated January 28, 1891, and in Austria- Hungary, No. 4,544 and No. 16,860, dated May 181891,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to that type of sewing-machines which can be employed at the will of the operator to form a lock-stitch or a chain-stitch.
The objects of my invention are to provide novel means for producing ordinary lock stitches, ordinary chain stitches, and stitches termen chain locked stitches, and to provide novel, simple, and eijicient means for throwing the lock-stitch mechanism out of action and the chain-stitch mechanism into action, and conversely.
To accomplish all these objects my invention involves the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional View taken longitudinally through the machine. Fig.2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig.8 is a similar view omitting the under reel-carrier. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line a: ce, Fig. 8. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional elevation showing the under reel-carrier. Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 are detail views of parts hereinafter explained. Fig. 12 is a detail sectional view showing the looper-beams, the cam for moving one beam lengthwise relatively to the other, and a portion ofthe under shaft. Fig. 13 is a detail transverse sectional view taken on the line y y, Fig. 3; and Fig. 14 isasimilar view taken on the line z a, Fig. 8, showing by dotted lines the pendent arm which carries the stud or roller.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The numeral 1 indicates the bed-plate of a v sewing-machine; 2, the overhanging arm containing a main drive-shaft 8, which reciprocates the needle-bar 4 and operates the takeup 5 and presser-bar 6 in any well-known manner. The drive-shaft connects by a pitman 7 or otherwise with a horizontal shaft 8, j ournaled in suitable bearings under the bedplate, all in such manner that when the driveshaft is turned the take-up, the presser-bar, and the needle-bar are actuated and the under shaft 8 revolves.
The under shaft is provided'with a cam 9, engaged with the cam-strap 10 of an arm 12, which is jointed to one extremity of a horizontal vibratory leverl, pivoted between its extremities, as at 14, to the bed-plate. The opposite end of the vibratcry lever is provided with a fork 15, engaging a detachable pin or bolt 16 on a slide 17, adapted to move in a horizontal plane transversely to the length of the under shaft. The transverselymoving slide 17 is provided with a groove 17 i, Fig. 7, which engages a suitable guide-rib 18, secured to or formed with a plate 19, Fig. 6, detachably secured to the bedplate, and which is arranged on its upper surface flush with the cloth-plate 2O and the usual slideplate 21.
The transversely-inovable slide 17 is provided at its outer end with a thumb or finger piece 22, by which it can be slid outwardly toward the rear side of the bed-plate when the forked end 15 of the vibratory lever 18 is disengaged from the slide by detaching the pin or bolt 16. The inner end of the slide 17 is provided with a pair of elastic fingers 28, Figs. 6 and 7, formed with lateral lips or tongues 24, which project toward each other and normally touch. -c that when the slide moves inward in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 6, the lips or tongues pass through the loop formed by the needle and a looperhereinafter explained and hold such loop, while the take-up tightly draws the upper or needle thread. As the slide is moved outward by the vibratory lever 13 the lips or tongues 24 are pressed apart by coming in contact with the needle, so that the needle and loop can escape.
The cloth-plate 20, Fig. (i, is formed with a pair of parallel slots 25, in which move the toothed plates 2G of a feed-dog 27, Fig. 10, so
that the fingers reciprocate between said toothed plates 2G.
The feed-dog 27 is secured to a rod or bar 2S, carried by upwardly-projecting arms 29 of a rock-shaft 30, so that when the latter is rocked the arms 29 are vibrated and the rod or bar 2S is moved lengthwise to reciprocate the feed-dog. The up-and-down motion of the feed-dog is effected by the lateral arm 31 of a rock-shaft 32, actuated by a cam 33 on the under shaft 8 engaging a second lateral arm 34 on the shaft 32 in such manner, and when the under shaft S is revolved the cam 33 vibrates the arm 34 to rock the shaft 32, and thus raise and lower the rod or bar 2S, while the latter is moved lengthwise by the arms 29 of the rock-shaft 30. The shaft 30 is rocked by means of an arm 35, havi ng a forked end embracinga cam 36 on the under shaft S. The arm 35 is rigid with a bar 37, journaled at its ends in lateral studs 3S, formed with the rockshaft 30,which operates the rod or bar 2S. The arm 35 is providedwitha guideway39,engaged withastud, pin, or roller40, secured to apendent bracket 41, formed with or attached to a lengthwise-movable rack 42, which engages a pinion 43 on the lower end of a vertical spindle 44, having a suitable crank or other handle 45, by which to turn it for the purpose of moving the rack and adjusting the stud or roller along the guideway 39. The stud or roller 40 constitutes the fulcrum of the arm 35, and when the cam 36 operates such arm 35 the latter is oscillated in a vertical plane to rock the shaft 30. By operating the handle 45 the rack 42 is moved lengthwise to adjust the stud or roller 40 in the guide 39, and consequently the stroke of the arm 35 can be varied for the purpose of increasing or diminishing the extent to which the arm 2S is moved lengthwise. By this means the horizontalstroke of the feed-dog can be varied for regulating the length of the stitches.
The bed-plate 1 is provided with a hanger 46, containing a bushing 47, through which the under shaft S extends. The bushing 47 is provided with a cam 4S, on which is centrally mounted a beam 49. The shaft 8 is adapted to rotate in the bushing 47, and on its outer end 50 is centrally mounted a beam 51. The beam 51 is provided at one end with a tubular projection 52 for carrying a stem 53.. having at one end a looper 54 and at the opposite end a disk or head 55, provided with a slot- 5G, engaged with a stud 57 on one end of the beam 49, so that as the beams are rotated the stud 57 slides back and forth in the slot 56, and thereby turns the looper 54 into the proper position for taking each loop in succession and for throwing such loop off in the required manner. The lower end of the beam 51 is provided with a stud 5S, adapted to move in a guideway 59 at the end of the beam 49 opposite the end which carries the stud 57, all in such manner that as the under shaft 8 revolves and turns the beam 5l the beam 49 is also turned, and through the medium of the cam 4S is slightly moved lengthwise, so that the stud 57 operates on the disk or head of the looper-stem 53 to turn the looper 54, as before stated. As the looperbeam 5l is secured to the shaft S and the looper-beam 49 is mounted on the cam or eccentric 48, it will be obvious that as the shaft S revolves the looper-beam 49 will be slowly reciprocated lengthwise independent ofthe looper-beam 5l, so that the looper-stem is oscillated for swinging or canting the hook 54 forward as it approaches the needle and backward as it continues its movement past the needle.
The lower thread is on a reel or spool located in a case or cage 60, removably arranged in a reel-case carrier G1, pivoted to a bracket 62, depending from the bed-plate.
The carrier and reel case are not herein more fully described and shown, as they constitute the subject-matter of my application for Letters Patent liled June 12`, 1891, Serial No. 396,931.
In operation as the elastic fingers 23 recede from the needle-hole G2 in the cloth-plate 2O the looper 54 approaches the needle and takes the thread to form the loop and then the elastic lingers advance and the lips or tongues 24 thereof enter the loop. As the looper continues its rotary movement the looper-stem 53 is oscillated to cant the looper backward for throwing off the loop. The take-up then operates and as the lips or tongues 24 are in the loop they hold the same while the take-up tightly draws the upper thread. To indicate the length of the stitches, the handle 45 of the pinion-spindle 44 carries a pin or pointer G3 to co-operate with a properly-graduated disk G4, fixed to the upper side of the bed-plate.
In using the machine for lock-stitch sewing the thread of the lower or under reel is employed, as usual, in conjunction with the up- IOO IIO
per or needle thread, whose loop is carried by the forked end of the vibratory lever 13, While for lock-chain-stitch sewing the lower reelthread is thrown in to co-perate with the upper or needle thread While the chain-stitch is being made.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i l. In a sewing-machine, the combination, with the bed-plate, a reciprocating needle-carrying bar, a rotary looper, and a lower reelcarrier, of a transversely-movable slide arranged under the bed-plate and having elastic lingers provided With inwardly-projecting lips or tongues, a vibrating lever moving in a horizontal plane parallel with the bed-plate and having a forked extremity, a device detachably connecting the forked extremity of the lever to the slide, a rotary under shaft having a cam and supporting the looper, and an arm jointed at one extremity to the lever and having at its opposite extremity a camstrap encircling the cam on the under shaft, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a needle-carrying bar, of a rotary under shaft, a pair of looselyconnected looper-beams rotated by the shaft, a looper having an axially-oscillating stem carried by one looper-beam and engaged by the other looper-beam, and means for moving the latter lengthwise as it rotates for axially oscillating the looper-stem, substantiall described.
3. The combination, With a needle-carrying bar, of a rotary under shaft, a pair of looselyconnected looper-beams rotated by the shaft, a looper having an axially-oscillating stem carried by one looper-beam and engaged by the other looper-beam, and a cam on the under shaft for moving the latter beam length- Wise as it rotates for axially oscillating the looper-stem, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a needle-carryin g bar, of a rotary under shaft, a pair of looselyconnected looper-arms rotated by the shaft, a looper having an axially-oscillating stem carried by one looper-beam and provided with a grooved disk or head engaged by a part of the other looper-beam, and a cam on the under shaft for moving the latter beam length- Wise as it rotates for axially oscillating the looper-stem, substantially as described.
