S. E. STOKES. CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR ELEVATORS.
Patented June 2, 1 891.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL E. STOKES, OF. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR ELEVATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,450, dated June 2, 1891.
Application filed November 15, 1890. Serial No. 371,542. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. STOKES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Controlling Devices for Elevators, of which the following is a specification. a
The object of my invention is to so connect the hand-wheel of a cab of an elevator with thecontrolling mechanism that the two ends of the connecting rope, chain, or band will be stationary, and the slack caused by the raising or lowering of the cab will be taken up by the counterbalance-weight of the cab, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view illustrating my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of details of the device shown in Fig. 1, and Figs. 4 and 5 are views illustrating a modification of the stringing of the controlling-rope.
A is the elevator-well, and B the cab.
The usual elevating-ropes are omitted from the drawings in order to avoid confusion; but they pass over the usual sheaves and are connected to any suitable lifting mechanism.
The counterbalance-weight L in the present instant carries a sheave Z, which is suspended byaloop in the rope a. This rope is attached to a fixture at one end and to the car at the other end and passes over a sheave O at the top, as clearly shown in the drawings. It will be understood that this counterbalance-weight may be geared to the car in any manner depending upon the character of car used.
D is the controlling mechanism, in the present instance in the form of a valve.
I is the controlling-rope, connected to the operating mechanism J on the car, and at the opposite end to a lever or wheel D on'the' valve-shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, this rope passes down from the car, around a sheave H at or near the base of the elevator, and up over a sheave carried by the counterbalanceweight L and down to the controlling mechanism. Thus it will be seen that as the elevator is raised or lowered the counterbalanceweight will be moved in proportion thereto, and consequently the slack in the controllingrope will be taken up or let out by this movement of the counterbalance-weight.
In Fig. 4 the stringing of the ropeis changed, it passing up over a sheave H and around the sheave H on the counter-weight, up over a sheave H down under the sheave D to the controlling mechanism. The stringing of the rope will vary, according to the character of the elevator and the space it occupies; but it will be understood that the controlling-rope must be geared in proportion to the gearing of the counterbalance-rope, as readily understood by those skilled in the art.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in an elevator, of the car, the counterbalance-weight therefor, the controlling mechanism, the operating device on the car, and a rope connecting the operating device and the controlling mechanism and passing around a bearing or pulley on the counterbalance-weight, whereby the slack in the rope is taken up or let out as the car is raised or lowered, substantially as set forth.
a 2. The combinatiom in an elevator, of the car and counter-weight, the operating device on the car, valve controlling mechanism, ropes connecting the valve-controlling mechanism with the operating device, with a take-up pulley carried by the counterbalance-weight and applied to the rope at a point between the operating device and the valve, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- SAMUEL E. STOKES.
